SoleSurvivor -> Why is it... (1/26/2002 6:24:00 PM)

Why are so many "ei" replaced by "ie" in the scenario descriptions? especially often: Abteilung becomes Abtielung Is this intended?

brianleeprice -> (1/26/2002 7:11:00 PM)

Most likely because it is drilled into our english speaking heads in grammar school - i before e except after c - etc, etc. One of those rules of thumb that really get in the way sometimes. Brian

hey Sole. Glad to see you here. On topic: Perhaps the cause is dyslexia...

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> (1/26/2002 7:45:00 PM)

Could be because, the world revolves around the english language, but most of the world doesnt speak english; hence most people cant decide which way to spell most of it. Then again, is it important if anyone uses english correctly, because there is no "correct" way to say anything in english in the first place. message mangled due to hour of morning heheh [ January 26, 2002: Message edited by: Les the Sarge 9-1 ]

did not think about that. I thought every German term is just written the way it is written in German when it appears in an English text.

I'll admit that I don't use a spellcheck on anything I write, and certainly won't get around to checking other languages (with the exception of peoples names, I do check that I spell those correctly). If you have a list compiled of all the misspellings, please enlighten us. In the csipcgn newsgroup someone recently complained that despite having a former Uboat commander as a consultant, they managed to misspell the name of one of the gauges in the Uboat control panel. Most likely a keyboarding error in that case, since they used the right word and just misspelled it.
thanks, John.

I could try to assemble a short liszt of what and where.

SoleSurvivor -> (1/27/2002 5:24:00 PM)

- Generally I don't know how you handle
ä ö ü ß letters you could either replace them with ae oe ue ss or with a o u ss what you currently do. The former is the "official" German substitute.
Steel Panthers mega campaign lost victories: Generally Abteilung is Abtielung in the text. Sturmgeschütze -> Sturmgeschuetze (currently: Sturmgeschutze) Scenario Taking Tuetzpunkte 11 the correct spelling is Stützpunkt -> Stuetzpunkt, pl. Stuetzpunkte The rest when I come across it, I don't think it makes sense to browse ALL data right now.

a belated christmas scenario Fallschirmjaeger

Bing -> (1/27/2002 9:47:00 PM)

I think it is a simple lack of knowledge concerning pronounciation of the German language. Once you have a basic grasp - mine is TRULY basic - you are more likely to use the "ie" and "ei" correctly. I've pointed out these obvious errors to designers. I am afraid, though, there is probably even less interest in correct spelling in German than there is in our version of English. I try my best but still miss some pretty easy stuff. Bing

Agree with SoleSurvivor..its important for the professionalism to get the sentences right.

Jacc -> (1/29/2002 6:06:00 PM)

"Stielhandgr"... Who has done the finnish names for units, since they appear to be correct. There is a vast amount of different units for the Finns, and all players who have significant knowledge of a specific country should try to send notes to the designers, looking ahead to the future versions.

AC -> (1/29/2002 6:58:00 PM)

As I am native german speaking (although I live in Italy)I too have noticed these errors in the text. I would offer myself to correct them, if it would be possible to get copies of all the textfiles included in the MCLV (or also MCNA).
If this is possible and wanted, please let me know. AC

Killerdaffy@gmx.de -> (1/30/2002 5:45:00 AM)

I'll offer help, it pretty much drives me crazy. Especially the "Abtielung" thing but also, unfortunately, the unit names/designations/abbreviations. Sometimes they are rather incomprehensible. I'd also be interested in doing a complete German mod for the scenario. It might be hard to do it professionally, though, since the original wording is hard to reconstruct from the english translation but is very important for the atmosphere. Plus, I don't want to look through all of the text files before I've played a greater part of the campaign because it might spoil most of the surprises. Killerdaffy @SoleSurvivor: Didn't know anybody still knew Geiersturzflug...

K G von Martinez -> (1/30/2002 4:52:00 PM)

By the way, even if you don't have a German keyboard you can write the German letters by pressing alt and at the same time typing the following numbers at the number block:
Ä = 0196
ä = 0228
Ö = 0214
ö = 0246
Ü = 0220
ü = 0252
ß = 0223
