RichardTheFirst -> "save game fail to load" (1/29/2002 4:20:00 AM)

I'm playing a PBEM game. I clicked end turn, the program said SAVING. I zipped the files and send the zip file to my opponent. All as usual so far... My opponent says he cannot load the game and the message "save game fail to load" appears. Any clues, guys? Cheers,

The infamous "security violation" syndrome, perhaps? I don't do PBEM - haven't yet I should say, because I will some day - but it seems to me the password business has been responsible for some trouble. Also, can we assume you both have the exact same OOB? According to Paul, all you have to do is open the OOB, you don't have to change anything at all, all you have to do is save the file and because the OOB is then not identical to that of your opponent, the ugly security violaton will occur. Otherwise, I wouldn't know. Just guessing, really. Bing

I saw security violations in a previous game, when me and my opponent changed from 6.1 to 7.0. It said "OOB security violation" or something like that. I think this is not the case. We are both at v7.0. But I noticed now an interesting detail: normally 3 of the 4 files have the same hour. But now I have: .aux 13:16
.cmt 10:46
.dat 11:42
.rec 10:46 Maybe the problem is here...

I play alot of PBEM games. After you hit the save button, the program takes you to a menu. Make sure you wait a 5 or 10 seconds on that screen before you exit. After 3 or 4 seconds the program will hit the harddrive and finish writing the save files. Once you hear the harddrive finish you can then send the files and it should work. Exit too quickly and you get the problem you mentioned. Hope this helps.

I think that's what happened Damn, I'll have to play that turn again. And now I more or less know were the enemy shells are going to land. Will try to forget that. Cheers Grimm [ January 28, 2002: Message edited by: RichardTheFirst ]

Yes, I'm experiencing the same difficulty. The question was answered in depth by Paul Vebber last week, and can be found by trolling through the list (search seems to have been eradicated). From what I gleaned of the problem, the solution is to save the game just before ending your turn.
Back up the saved files, i.e. save them to winzip.
Finish your turn. It will go through the motions and you should send your turn off to the opponent again; however if you add one step and check to see if you can open the file you will receive an error message. If its anything except 'saved game failed to load", send it, it encrypted fine. If the dreaded message appears, simply extract your backed up file repeat until 'saved game failed to load' does not appear. It's far less painfull then playing a 60min turn over again [ January 28, 2002: Message edited by: Galka ]

Richard...did you check the file save times...if they are different you will have to replay the move...although if you have the right hacking software you could edit the file save times and change them to the same time...the save time is just a file attribute saved with the file name, so it should be easy...I haven't done it, so can't advise ont he software. If the files all have the same time, then there is a chance that the "exit" button was used and not the "end turn" button...it is easy to do since they are adjacent...Richard...try reopening the turn you sent...if you can, then end the turn and resend it. I have found a SOLUTION to the synch problem...in 5.0 it happened every second move, until I worked this out. The problem only occurs if you have accessed/played in solitaire mode (and maybe others, though I never use them) before accessing SPWAW in PBEM mode. The solution is to only access PBEM from an original system launch...if you have been playing in any other mode, close down the game and exit...then relaunch it at the desktop icon. Since doing this I have NEVER had a synch problem. Paul's solution was to always exit a PBEM turn without ending it...then copy the files to a separate back-up directory. Then open the turn again and end the turn...if the save fails, simply copy the back-up files into the spwaw\email directory and try again...keep repeating until you get a correct save.

Ran into this with the challenge game against Klank. He had the error message He deleted the game files he had in his email folder, than saved/opened the files I sent back into the folder. This worked and the game has given no trouble since. PS you may have to redo the turn. [ January 29, 2002: Message edited by: Challenge ]

Swagman and Challenge: I don't have the hacker's software but I'll try the other suggestions including deleting the previous games on the zip file. Cheers guys,

WE had a long discussion about this problem some time ago especially if you play a torunament and a neutral master sets the battle to be fought from two different players than him... Not yet any final solution , just the warning to look at the timestamp of files before sending them to the opponent..the procedure at long may be boring so this thread must go on ..
still safe but more flexible protection system should be one point of no doubt in any PBEM game... I hope Paul V will move the topic into the classicals to give this subject a conitnuos live until solution

RichardTheFirst -> (1/30/2002 4:46:00 AM)

It is the second time I hear about that classical threads or "Hall of Fame threads" (as a matter of fact, we are discussing that now at the SPFans) in a short time. Where can I find it?

swagman -> (1/30/2002 6:15:00 AM)

I just ran a quick search of the web and came up with a shareware file attribute editor...try before you buy and available for download here http://www.basta.com/ProdFilo.htm One of its facilities is to edit create date/time and other dates...looks simple to use. I haven't tried this, but I assume it will solve the problem.

Hi I was without internet for 2 days, but today I was able to get that SW. Infortunately it can't change time atributes in Win98se, only in Win2000 or WinNT. I sent it to my opponent, maybe that's his OS. Do you know by any chance, one that works in win 98se? Many Thanks,

Larry Holt -> (2/1/2002 9:55:00 PM)

As gruesome as this might be, in 98 you can always set your clock to the desired date/time, create a copy of the files and they will carry that date/time stamp. The hall of fame thread is in the forums listing. Its right after the SPWaW entry.

Yes you can, but it will change the Created and Last Accessed time atributes not the Last Modified atribute. I don't think it is enough. Is it? Cheers,
