rogueusmc -> WitP for Mac? (8/5/2004 8:12:22 PM)

Can I get WitP for my Mac? It's a top of the line AppleIIe.

mavraam -> RE: WitP for Mac? (8/5/2004 8:19:21 PM)

Isn't there software that allows windows programs to run on a Mac?

rogueusmc -> RE: WitP for Mac? (8/5/2004 8:23:26 PM)

A serious post?...[:D]...I expected trash talk...I posted to see what smart-a$$ed comments I'd get...you know, for entertainment while I was at work.

P.S. Macs suck [:D]

DrewMatrix -> RE: WitP for Mac? (8/5/2004 8:36:32 PM)

Actually there is a Gary Grigsby South Pacific game that will run on your Apple IIe. At least the version I have in my basement used to run on my IIe.

Are you also interested in my copy of Bomb Alley?

I was just trying to start an entirely worthless but entertaining thread...never thought I'd get serious responses...[:D]

Fallschirmjager -> RE: WitP for Mac? (8/5/2004 9:07:21 PM)

Im sure all 7 Mac users would be overjoyed to learn this game is avaliable to them

Arnir -> RE: WitP for Mac? (8/5/2004 9:08:38 PM)

You can play WitP on a Mac. It is just dangerous to balance your Windows machine on another computer while playing the game. [:)]

What's the international symbol for the bird? [:)]

I would love to see it on my Mac(s). I at least realize the only thing PCs are good for is games :)

There is emulation software for Macs (Virutal PC being the major one these days), but they are still suffering from being very heavy resource hogs (esp. since Microsuck bought out VPC recently), and they have zero 3D support so far.

I did ship out an email to several of the good porting houses out there, but I don't expect much from it. The vast majority of games are getting ported or concurrently written these days for OS X, but the numbers for this game will probably be too small to touch (though Hearts of Iron is available for OS X).

Speaking of which - does anyone have sales numbers to date?

Just curious...

SunDevil_MatrixForum -> RE: WitP for Mac? (8/5/2004 9:18:47 PM)

Mongo,

I was just kidding, Rogue wanted some entertainment so I gave it to him. Thanks for the laughs. [:D]

P.S. International symbol for the bird is........ [:-] this will have to do, it looks like his middle finger at least. [:D]

mongo -> RE: WitP for Mac? (8/5/2004 9:28:00 PM)

Thanks SunD! [:D]

I can appreciate the humor here too. Besides, NOBODY wants that kind of jihad going on here. You poor Winders users have enough trouble with viruses and such [8D]

PacWar did run pretty good in VPC waay back when. I'm still waiting for us to get the new version and I'll let folks know about the WitP performance if they are seriously looking to play on a Mac..

My main gripe with my PC is that I have to crawl under my desk to switch back and forth (I keep all my music in iTunes on my G4)... Anyone know of a decent USB KVM switch that doesn't cost a fortune? All the ones I've seen are upwards of $150?

It uses DirectX so it would never be able to run on a MAC even with a Window's emulator like Wine on Linux. The only really portable games are ones that opt for more portable system components like OpenGL and are coded using cross platform toolkits. Doom and Quake come to mind...

mongo -> RE: WitP for Mac? (8/5/2004 9:36:34 PM)

There actually was some work on making DirectX work on OS X a couple years ago. I think they got pretty well into it before it was dropped.

I'm not a programmer, but several of those I know say that DX is rather a pain to program in? They'd rather work in OpenGL and such.

Apple has signed onboard OpenPlay recently though, so things may even out if MS would ever accept a standard other than theirs [:)]

I am a PC fan but the Mac is THE BEST graphics platform out there...just wish I could afford to buy one just to have just for graphics.

I suppose the "difficulty" is determined more by what you are familiar with. Developers in the PC division at EA-Sports probably think DX is a piece of cake. Maybe the only ones qualified to make that value judgement are developers familiar with DX and OpenGL both.

I've looked at the SDK and read a 3D programming book about three years ago. Didn't seem too terribly difficult, but like MFC, it likely has some "gotchas" in it that leave you scratching your head....

mongo -> RE: WitP for Mac? (8/5/2004 10:11:21 PM)

They are cheaper than the Dells we buy for school here if you go component for component.. I know, most folks build their own PC for a couple hundred anymore. You can get a good Mac for under 1k however if you shop right (the refurb page is usually great pricing - and there is nothing wrong with them cosmetically or otherwise once Apple refurbs them)

The major cost is the monitors. Apple always wants dearly for their LCDs.

Then again, that HD 30" display is unbefreakinglievable [&o]

Ayup.. that's what I've always found to be true too Zoomie. I swear MS wrote it just for EA sometimes [:)]

I work IT at a university so I deal with our programmers (who do all mainframe and web-based stuff). The game programming knowledge I have comes from the Engineering kids who learn from their classes and are personally driven to be the next Carmack [;)]

I can't program a line.. never could, and never really care to [8D]

Graphical emoticons are so limiting. You are stuck with [:D] and [:'(] and [&:] and [sm=duel.gif]. You need to be a little more creative, heh.

It's the nature of warriors to fight constantly, even amongst themselves. My platoon used to beat the snot out of each other on a nearly weekly basis [:D]

Grogs should be able to throw barbs without having to think about loads and ranges and armor thicknesses [8D]

Now, I'm not a Mac basher, but the price/performance ratio of the Mac architecture is terrible, except for some multimedia applications. I can build a dual Opteron 1.8GHz system for much less than the $2,000 dual 1.8GHz G5.

Oh, where is Apple's refurb page? I didn't know they had one.

OK, enough OT banter. [:D]

The problem is that GHz doesn't really equate to all the power.. The FSB speed, memory speed, and all-around architecture make the differences.. The major problems that the Mac has in gaming is the video and audio drivers usually lag behind, so optimization takes a while.

If you look on the left side of the Apple Store , there is a Special Deals link with a red "Save" tag.

and just for Carni...[sm=00000945.gif]
