XLegion -> How Do I Buy it with only a 28.8 Modem? (8/7/2004 9:31:37 PM)

Well the subject tells it all. Can anyone tell me how long it would take to download the game if I bought it? I really want to buy this thing, but I have heard it may take 28 hrs to download it at 28.8. My service provider would cut me off long before that I am sure. I can't get a straight answer from Matrix Games themselves. They make it sound as if you can order a stand alone game on CD but when I ask about it they seem to imply that the only way you can buy "War in the Pacific" is through download. What is going on? This is the most difficult time I have ever had in trying to purchase a product that I want. How can this game ever be a hit when you have to go to such lengths to purchase it?[&:]

When you buy it, you are paying the price of the game and are allowed to download it. However, for 10 dollars more, you can have a CD mailed to you with it. However, there have been some problems with it, many of us (myself included) who ordered a CD on the day it came out are still waiting for it (38 days after ordering). But, it is definately worth the wait.

it stops after about 170-175mb

NOW THATS LONG

you have to order the download and the cd
to get the game

i is suppost to take 7-14 days to get to you

I tend to agree. Seems unfortunate to me that people want the product but they are making it difficult to get it. I guess it saves money on packaging and one has to get it from Matrix direct at full cost, can't run down to a computer store and get it at a cheaper price. I have great respect for the guys at Matrix and still think they do a bang up job on most of their products. This DL only trend though is discouraging.

Another question the original poster should be asking themselves is can they even run this game on a computer which has that old of a modem? I can only imagine how old that computer is. When has a recent system like in the last 2 or 3 years ever came with a 28.8 modem? If you have less than 256mb or Ram then you are not going to be able to run this game. Just trying to help you from buying a $70 game that you might not be able to use.

Owl,

There is no difference between ordering another game from another site on the internet. Either way you would have to wait for them to send it to you in the mail. The only difference with Matrix is that you can download it right away, which is not very common with new games unless they are online games.

XLegion, a little further down this tread, you will see my post on when Matrix is going to release the "boxed" version of the game. I am asking this, because like you I do not want to risk the whole download adventures, which you can read of thoughout.
I believe the box version is going to come from matrix and not DR, so we should be able to avoid the fun of waiting 38 days and counting as some have.
I am waiting for a follow up from Matrix, for further info, but as you can read they plan to release the boxed version in a few weeks and it will be updated to the newest version.
The future patches should be small in size, so your downloads will be "do able". I hope so, I am on a slow download too.
Finally, look at the bright side! You have not had to have any of the problems, and will get all the benefit of the people who have helped find the problems when the game first came out.

Whistling Death,

The boxed version is coming from DR, it will just be another option when you order the game.

Half way down, first page from Mr. Frag

SunDevil, thanks for your responce. When Mr.Frag stated you can only purchase the boxed version from Matrix, I took that to mean how it is read. However, you could be right and it may mean that you can purchase it through matrix, and they will then tell DR to ship it (or some other third party vendor, and means). However, I wanted to get Marc
to give me his insight, and he did respond with some helpful information. Perhaps he will add to this later.

Minimum requirements are a very flexible thing [;)] My 4 year old machine runs some very graphically demanding games at an almost acceptable speed [:D]

Mr.Frag -> RE: How Do I Buy it with only a 28.8 Modem? (8/8/2004 1:39:26 AM)

Define 28.8 modem please ... most 28.8 modems are actually 56k give or take unless it happens to be something like a *really* old US Robotics.

You can download the game over the internet using a resumable download program ... so what if it takes a week of nights? Does your computer do anything while you sleep? [:D]

The big question becomes how long does your Internet Provider let you stay connected and do they charge you for connect time. If so, time becomes important. If not, who cares? [;)]

You might want to list the *rest* of your system so we can stear you better.

On simply the 28K thing, that doesn't matter, if a PC has a serial/com port it can support any modem , 14k, 28k, 36k, 56k...

I got over thar my old P-II 233mhz that can connect on its 28k modem... if my newer p-4 1.8 ghz had a serial port I could simply hook it up and use it so don't assume someone using a 28K doesn't have an up to date Pc... through my up to date PC [:D][:D] has no Serial or Parallel port... it has 2 USB hubs supporting 10 USB connections [:D][8D]

But point is if it had a Serial port I could connect any of my 14.4k, 28.8k, 33.6k or 56k modems...

I do know people who still use dialup, sometimes in fact dialup is only
connection some can get, yet they have pentium 4's at 1-3 ghz and 256Mb to 1 gig Ram..
