Trapper -> Mega Campaign install snafu? (1/31/2002 9:17:00 AM)

Howdy all,
Paul if ya read this thnx for the 7.1 beta! It appears to have stopped the synch insect. I just received the WT and LV campaigns today and seem to have been the victim of the disappearing program trick!! I installed DF some months ago and all is well. Tonight I installed WT then LV
(LV's install routine would not operate from the cd's install window so I went to explorer and installed it by clicking directly on the install icon for LV), both appeared to install correctly but neither is present in the Mega Campaign list in SPWAW! DF is there as number one on the list but where the other two went is anybodys guess. I used default locations etc. How do I get them to appear on the MC list? I'm running windows xp
and all else appears to be fine. I'd really like to try out the two new campaigns if I could only get them onto the list! Anyway thnx for the help.

Ok, while waiting for a reply I see some posts addressing the issue of getting all the MC's to install in the right place, order of install, etc. However the advise appears to be all over the ballpark.(I mean no disrespect) Has or will someone please post the exact order (and preferably the method for us computer idiots) of installation to get things right. It appears I will have to uninstall SPWAW and all MC's and reinstall as follows 1) SPWAW 7.0, DF, WT, and LV. Then a patch for WT? Ahhhhhhhhh this is giving me a headache! Also I have to move sound files around etc? As you can see it is somewhat overwelming for a computer novice. I hate to ask but why dont the MC's and all pertinent components install correctly to begin with? Anyway thnx for the order of things if anyone would be so kind!!

dox44 -> (1/31/2002 9:48:00 AM)

make sure they are in the megacampaign folder and
that the...lost victories.cfg and other *.cfg's are in the megacam folder...they weren't in my
install..

Trapper -> (1/31/2002 9:56:00 AM)

Casebier,
Thnx for the reply but I have no idea what those files are and where and how to get them where they belong. I have got such a frustration headache right now that I'm gonna take a break and hope someone posts the exact fix here. Has anyone got the games to install correctly the first time?

Redleg -> (1/31/2002 9:59:00 AM)

I don't think they will install without a couple or three file movings. I know I had to move sound files and something else. Also a small patch I had to download at Fab's site.

I reinstalled all three Mega's today, just to do it. Frankly, the install proceedure is a mess except for Desert Fox. With Watchtower, which I installed second, I first installed v7 off the CD, then the Mega Campaign. Then I finished by installing the Lost Victories Mega. Watchtower did get into the MegaCam folder, but had folders within it. I had to manually take the files out of each and put them where they should go, i.e., the Watchtower .cfg file went into the MegaCam folder, the SHP files into the game SHP folder, and the SND files into the game SND folder. The actual Watchtower files I took out of the extra folder and put into the main Watchtower folder. (Some of these replaced files already in in other folders, but they were the same files, so no problem) Then I deleted all the empty folders under Watchtower. Lost Victories was worse, with the program telling me it couldn't find the right file to do the set-up. That's been discussed at length in the Forum, and I just went to Start/Run and browsed until I got the LV CD and used the proper (Update.exe) file to install it. But the LV folder didn't go into the Mega Cam folder as it should. So, I moved it out of the Steel Panthers World At War folder into the MegaCam folder. Then I had to go through the same thing I did with Watchtower. Finally, I put the Watchtower map icon patch into the game SHP folder and upgraded to v7.1. All the MC's work exactly as they should, but it is a very messy install and if someone doesn't know their way around their computer files, it will be a nightmare. Anybody who needs step-by-step help with the installs can call me at (561) 745-9179 between 9am - 10pm EST. If I'm out, leave your number on my voice mail and I'll get back to you. I run Windows 98 SE, but any Windows install will be about the same.

It could be of interest of the wargamers that purchased the Megas, if Matrix post the instructions as a downloable .txt or .zip file, when those instructions patchs will become stable, too.
And/Or posted/published, in a stable manner, in a stable place... It's fustrating to try to "search" the correct instructions in the forum, as the threads are moving and the search facility dissapeared some time ago. Please.

RockinHarry -> (1/31/2002 9:27:00 PM)

The install path showed in the install window for MCLV is misleading. If launching update.exe, it defaults to something like "C:\MatrixGames\Steel Panthers World At War\Lost Victories" and obviously is wrong! If you correct the install path just to the main SPWAW directory on your Hard Drive, then everything goes smoothly. For example my SPWAW resides in C:\Steel Panthers World At War\ on the Hard Drive and pointing exactly to this destination in upgrade.exe install window leads to the files all installed into the right folders! DONīT ADD \MegaCam\Lost Victories to the install path and everything works as intended. Same for MC Watchtower: Just point to the main "Steel Panthers World At War" folder on the Hard Disk and do not add any subfolders to the install path! (NOOOOOOOOOO Megacam\Operation Watchtower 42)!!!!!!!!! __________

I installed LV and WT last week, in that order. LV went perfect, didn't even do the normal layer. WT did layer, but that was me, cause *I* didn't pay attention to the directory setup. To avoid layering, all you have to do is watch where the game installs. You'll see a screen where the disk asks where you want game, and sets up a pathway. Most people just hit next at this point, which you should never do. Look where the game is going. Matrix - to it's credit - actually tends to have the install scan to looks for things like where the last version of SP is, and if you've used default in the past you'll see something like this for your target directory: c:/Program Files/Matrix Games/Steel Panthers World at War - and possible more for a MC. Now, often there is a second /Steel Panthers World at War. Delete that manually. Also, I noticed with WT on the second install - when I payed attention - that there is a big red note of the top of the directory screen that tells you a couple things to look for. Really, though, install probs tend to come cause the operatior just hits next and doesn't look at the info in front of them. Go Pats! Alex

I feel like I'm pretty darn lucky. I have an installation of SPW@W that started with 5.x and has been patched many times, including the beta 7.1. The LV CD automatically detected a mech.exe version equal to or later than its own - the logfile.txt installation file clearly shows mech.exe as skipped. The path was as above, pointed strictly to the World at War dir and not anything else. LV only was installed, nothing was overwritten that should not have been, despite the generalized warning in the installation prep screen. mech.dll was replaced - not the exe. Thus far - beginning of third battle - MCLV works fine. The sound is playing just fine, thank you (the guy pronounces "regiment" better than anyone I"ve ever heard, anywhere, any time). Prep to third battle, the first three "document" images don't show properly, the first one not at all, the other two that weird sort of result that comes from I think saving a certain way for web photos, but am not sure about this aspect. Everything else so far has been great. I would like to thank Brent and everyone involved for excellent scenario design in LV - the two battles I've completed required action right down to the last or next to last turn. And yet, the play is not so difficult as to be impossible, a grevious error not a few scen designers have committed. Never thought I would really like Eastern Front, but it seems this old dog CAN learn new tricks. Woof!!! (In dog years that = horray for LV!) Bing

Wild Bill -> (1/31/2002 10:28:00 PM)

The Watchtower team did not prepare the installation program for the game. What I have seen as the reason for folders inside folders is that the installation program adds to whatever location you choose Steel Panthers World at War. People don't check the path for installation and assume all is well. Now once installed here are some pointers to be sure all is in order. 1. Inside the MegaCam directory you should have a folder and a file for each Mega Campaign. You should also have a save folder. 2. There should be NO folders inside folders in the SPWAW\MegaCam directory. \SPWAW
...\Lost Victories
...\Operation Watchtower 42
...\Save
....... Lost Victories.cfg
....... Operation Watchtower 42.cfg
....... Mainsplash.lbm All lost victories files should go inside the Lost Victories folder EXCEPT any SND files. Any SND files go into the SND directory. All of them. All LV Snd Files are 11000+ and all MC-W Snd files are 22000+ If you have a Lost Victories folder nested inside another Lost Victories Folder, move them out of the sub folder and put them into the main Lost Victories folder. Then they both will appear. You'll also need the MC-W patch to see the aircraft. You can get it from Fabio Prado's web site. Load that patch in AFTER you install both MCs. Enjoy...WB [ January 31, 2002: Message edited by: Wild Bill ]

Bill - There is a "\stream dir" inside the "\Snd" dir and I think that is proper, isn't it? Been there for some time IIRC. The LV wav files appear to be 22xxx. Don't know about Watchtower, but both DF and LV installed quite well for me. I don't use the "auto" this or "auto" that settings for CD's. I always click on "Setup.exe", which is present in I think about 99% of game CD's I"ve come across. Bing

Bing -> (2/1/2002 12:50:00 AM)

OOps - I meant 21xxx wav files appear to be LV, not 22. Sorry. Bing

Bing -> (2/1/2002 1:03:00 AM)

I think I got it worng again. Just forget the number of the wav files, its apparent I'm never ging to get it right. But I do think the stream dir is properly nested within the Snd dir, isn't it? I doubt if I would get any kind of sound it those files were somewhere else. But the way its going today --- who knows. Bing

Grenadier -> (2/1/2002 2:00:00 AM)

Lost Victories sound files are 5 digit starting with 11, 11001, 11002, etc

Yes. Thank you. And the sub-dir for "stream" is where it ought to be, under the Snd dir, right? I don't see where I would get any sound at all unless it WAS OK for it to be there, but today is turning out to be one of those days ..... Bing

Well I'm back from a rather long break and must say thank you very much one and all for your help, advise, and tactfull admonishment on the pay attention to install path!!!! I followed Warriors method and it worked great after I figured out how to move things around. I believe RockinHarrys method would be the simplist if you got that info before installation. Thanks Bill for your input as well. Now on to the WT patch and the heat of battle!!
