I assume anyone can play - my grandfather took this picture while he was in Panama.

HMS Nelson or HMS Rodney.

Is it possibly King George V

Nelson from his caption - all the canvas interested me, but I'm sure it was plenty warm during the transit. Grandpa was on the USS Mindanao before the war in China and as a CPO on a number of subs during the war. He took some great battleship pictures during the 1930's.

The canvas was used on long cruises on or south of the Equator on almost any warship in the 1920's-1930's. Amazingly enough, after WW2 it all but disappeared.

Air conditioning I imagine. That, and most ships without it were mothballed, scrapped or nuked at Bikini.

Not true (in the RN), it didn't dissapear completely it was only used in harbour and still is.

Sorry forgot to add. I doubt if canvas was left up while at sea anyway even steaming at 20 knot you would have quite a wind over the deck which it due course would tear the canvas. You could always erect them on the mast[:D] though.

The R13, Gudgeon, Skipjack, and Pikefish.
