Captain Ed -> Japanese Amphibious Tactics (8/11/2004 7:30:33 PM)

I am presently embroiled in the Grand campaign its Early Dec 41 I am trying to capture a few key base`s but do not want to bombard them first so as not to damage key installations as a result I am suffering high casualties on landing but I will persevere anyway my question will the airfields and docks be damaged anyway when I capture them and I may as well have bombarded first to avoid the high casualties [&:]

Base facilities will receive varying amounts of damage upon capture, whether you bombard or not. A pre-invasion naval bombardment will for sure tear everything up, and it will not necessarily produce the effect you are looking for. A naval or air bombardment's main effect on ground units is disruption, which pretty much goes away by the following turn. What you need is some artillery, which is plentiful in theatre. That way your ground attack has its own organic support, and you can blast away without having to worry about wrecking the place in the process. Bombard with all units for a few turns, then do a deliberate assault with the ground pounders while the artillery continues to bombard. Just be sure to bring plenty of supply.

I have had BBs and CAs bombard a base two turns in a row to support my troop's invasion. I have captured bases with 40+ damage in all 3 categories from this heavy support, but I have also captured bases with less than 5 in all 3 with this kind of support. Its kinda random on the damage and depends on what is at the base I believe. If the target base has aircraft there and you bombard, you will tear up the airfield... Same with the base having a CD unit and your invasion TF having fire support (gunships) thus will tear up the port...

One of the biggest factors (I think) is whether or not the enemy holding the base has any engineers there as they automatically repair damages. And can fix a lot of the damage by the time you capture it and drive them off.... awfully nice of them isn't it ? [:D]

Remember that engineer units will DESTROY facilities as they leave, they are DEMO units. That may account for the disparity in damage.
