Now that was funny. That whatever-it-was vehicle driving off like it was into the sunset had me in tears. As a courtesy to the bandwidth-poor though, you might warn that your link is to a big-ol' streaming vid though.

I had the pleasure of watching a LAPES (Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System?) demonstration in the summer of '82 at Fort Bragg. What a disaster - but funny as heck. The first vehicle to be dropped was a Sheridan tank. Immediately upon extraction, it rolled just like the first vehicle in this video. I'm sure the vehicle was totaled. Airborne!

Later in the demonstration was another Sheridan. The C-130 approaches, lines up, and then drones past the spectators. Nuthin happening. At some point the parachute popped out and partially deployed. The C-130 continues on and then pulls up after running out of DZ. At this point, when the Herc is a good 500' in the air the Sheridan launches out the back and lands in the woods. We could see a whole swath of trees mowed down by the Sheridan when it hit. Airborne!!

Yup, sure made me want to join 82nd. You know, I guess it's a good idea, and in combat you can afford to take some drop losses. Plus, its the only way to get in heavier stuff without landing. Still, if they can't get it right on what is essentially an unpaved airstrip, what chance do they have of deploying a vehicle in the wild?

had some training with the Green hat dudes, when I was in the Marines, night drops and all that good stuff, linked up with them, then they had a resupply drop set up the next night, in the swamps, in the winter, big pallet of ammo and TNT was pushed out at a little over treetop level, and they forgot to cut the straps holding the chute closed

we had to walk though the ice and swamps till we found the pallet, funny thing was, the Green hat dudes were more upset about it then we were, we were like, what else is new, they didn't like getting wet or cold

That was not a runaway vehicle.

It was a rapid deployment of newly arrived mobile assets. [:D]

Great video. Reminds me of my first few jumps.

Also proves the old adage that it isn't the fall that kills you..it's the sudden stop at the end, also known as rapid deceleration syndrome.
