Im in a smaller scenario, with no production. A lot of my aircraft have a highlighted button "upgrade (aircraft type name) 0" What does this mean? And how do I upgrade my aircraft?

The 0 means you don't have any to upgrade to ... if and when that aircraft is available and you have enough of them, you can upgrade the group to the newer aircraft. In the small scenarios, this is simply done by date.
