GOPconservative1 -> Is there an acronym list? (8/18/2004 6:22:07 AM)

Hey all. I just got WitP, and I was wondering if there is a list anywhere that shows all the acronyms that are commonly used in the game. If not then perhaps one should be made. I consider myself a fairly moderate wargamer, but even I am getting confused at some of these.

Check the annex of the rules.

Yep. I found them.

OH by the way a collier is a coal ship. took me forever to find out what it was. The japanese have a bunch of these ships.

Platoonist -> RE: Is there an acronym list? (8/18/2004 6:39:16 AM)

I've always wondered how they came up with AK for a cargo ship. Attack cargo ship is all I can figure. AP for troop transport...maybe something to do with amphibious? I keep thinking Associated Press. Is the ship packed with war correspondents? [&:]

Platoonist -> RE: Is there an acronym list? (8/18/2004 3:38:07 PM)

Actually he does look a bit like HDS don't it? [:D] It's actually taken from WW2 artist's Tom Lea's painting 'Down from the Ridge' based on his observation and sketches of the Marines fighting on Pelieu.

As to why cargo ships are called AK: I think the etymology was that AC was already taken (all naval strategy revovled around colliers and coaling stations in 1900), so it had to be (K)argo instead of (C)argo.

A "Destroyer" by the way was shortened from the original "Torpedo Boat Destroyer". (In 1900 the worlds naval brass were terrified they had spent all that money on Capital ships and light cheap torpedo armed ships might be able to wipe them out).

Just like at K-Mart: the "K" stands for "Kwality"

DrewMatrix -> RE: Is there an acronym list? (8/18/2004 8:30:07 PM)

I don't know if this is true, but it is a true legend:

"OK" reportedly comes from Andrew Jackson, the early 19th century US President. He would sample barrels of Tennessee Whiskey to see which were of high enough quality to be served at State Dinners.

Those which were of sufficient quality he had marked "O.K." to indicate the whiskey was "Ol Keerect" (All Correct).

Maliki -> RE: Is there an acronym list? (8/19/2004 8:39:26 AM)

It would be nice if there was a little dictionary with the game. Some things are easy for those not steeped in naval lingo to figure out.Like Cv=Carrier=air combat,BB=battleship=either slugging it out ship to ship,or good for naval bombardment.Just a little description of what an AO or AK or CL was, mainly, used for may give some people a better idea of how to handle these ships, and form TF's in the game.

CLAA,easy to figure out..AVD,SC,AP not so easy. It's easy to say read the included PDF manual for some ship details, but some people will be put just by the sheer size, and sometimes complexity of it.

I've been trying to find all those names like KB, DEI, PI, SRA.... Still don't know what is DEI. List of these would be really nice...

Exactly.Even if you have read or know a fair amount about the theaters in the game,it doesn't always mean you understand every little nuance or abbreviation about them. For example I know that a CL=a light cruiser.Okay, but now what? How were light cruisers used at the time, and by the different nations, what was the main purpose of that class of ship and how did the wartime experience change their use(if at all)?Just because a ship has the same designation in all the navies does not mean it was used the same way by all..just look at American and Japanese sub doctrine. You could probably find all this on the net but it would be less time consuming just to read a simple description for the different abbreviations used in the game.

DEI is everybody's shorthand for the Dutch East Indies. [8D]

dtravel -> RE: Is there an acronym list? (8/19/2004 9:25:21 AM)

SNAFU = Situation Normal, All F****d Up
FUBAR = F****d Up Beyond All Recognition
KB = Some Japanese term for the carrier group that attacked Pearl Harbor
SRA = Southern Resource Area (Dutch East Indies, Malaya, Burma, New Guinea).
PI = Philippine Islands

Those first two are especially important to know. [:D]

Platoonist -> RE: Is there an acronym list? (8/19/2004 9:37:34 AM)

Good point. I believe Netherland East Indies is actually the correct term for the Dutch colonies in what is now Indonesia. Maybe Dutch crept in because it sounds more 'possessive'. [;)]
