furious -> Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/19/2004 12:41:39 AM)

I can't help chuckling every time I see the SS Brown Ranger appear on screen, that's one ship I'm sure nobody wanted to serve on.

On the other side of the coin who wouldn't want to serve on HMS Valiant or Warspite?

DrewMatrix -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/19/2004 12:47:42 AM)

All those ships (22 of them IIRC) called Andrea Luckenbach etc. I make whole convoys consisting only of Luckenbachs[;)]

The Gnome -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/19/2004 12:49:26 AM)

I love the ammo ships named after volcanoes.... smoooth.

RUPD3658 -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/19/2004 2:09:51 AM)

My favorite is the SS Wahoo. Sounds like a party ship Wahoooo!

Platoonist -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/19/2004 3:58:07 AM)

I imagine a submarine named Flasher must have a crew wearing trench coats. [:D]

Fallschirmjager -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/19/2004 4:27:14 AM)

The British ship names the Black Prince. Is it a CL?
I need a banner of that ship...kick ass name

fbastos -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/19/2004 4:57:56 AM)

I was always bewildered with the Japanese carrier Kaga, as in my native language it literally means "to poop"... :)

In fact, it is a bit grossier variation; I would never be able to tell that ship's name in my father's house..

Caltone -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/19/2004 5:00:43 AM)

As a huge Star Trek fan I love any ship named 'Enterprise'

RUPD3658 -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/19/2004 5:10:27 AM)

You have 2. The US CV and a Brit CL.

Caltone -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/19/2004 5:12:05 AM)

Indeed, and if I manage to sink Sonny's current CV Enterprise, I think I'll see a third [:D]

let's see, there was a black prince that was an ironclad steamer, sister ship of warrior (1862-1923), a ww1 armored cruiser (1906-1916) and a bellona (or modified dido) class anti-aircraft cruiser. you may recognize the name diadem, another member of the class. i think this class was represented in HMS Ulysses by allistar macclean. don't think any served in the pacific during the war but black prince was transferred to new zealand in 1948.
what do you want on the banner?

As I understand it there was a sub named Goldfish. Flasher at least has some flash. [:'(]

If it never served in the Pacific then dont worry about a banner

BossGnome -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/19/2004 7:31:32 AM)

I dont know why i just like the twin carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku. They were the 2 carriers that always served together, and lasted the longest without being sunk by the americans. (If i remember correctly they were the 2 carriers left after midway) . Plus the names sound cool.

I must agree, I have always had a soft spot for those two myself. Even in UV playing as the Allies, I would feel like shedding a tear when I sank or badly damaged one of them.

"As a huge Star Trek fan I love any ship named 'Enterprise' "

The origonal show also had several other cv names, the Lexington was one if not mistaken. And some others, but my memory fails me....

OK, here comes my admission of trekkie geekness. Lexington, Exeter, Kongo, Constellation, Constitution, Intrepid, Potempkin...darn, what was the ship which the Enterprise's experimental computer nearly destroyed in that one episode?[&:][;)]

Names may sound cool but how tough can you be in ships whose names translate to "Laughing crane and Happy crane"?

Geek to geek: I think it was the intrepid and the potamkin was destroyed. Nothing like hearing Checkov pronounce Potamkin.

Tomo -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/19/2004 10:33:49 PM)

Small advice from Japanese gamer.
Shokaku means flying crane
Zuikaku means super lucky(happy) crane
"Sho(Shou)" is same pronunciation as"laugh" but in this situation, this is "fly".
Pronunciation is same but Kanji letter is different.
You know that all Kanji letters have its own meaning.

Crane is symbol of super good fortune in Japan.
There is Proverb in Japan
"Crane is 1000 years, Turtle is 10000 years"
It means they live very long years. I don't know if it's true[&:]

So, Shokaku & Zuikaku could live longer than other Japanese CVs[:)]

Hiryu means flying dragon. I like her name.

The ammo ship in PH on 12-07-41 is called the "Pyro".

I'm thinking...

He11 no!

Must have gotten bad info from a History Channel Documentery. Thanks for setting it straight. I agree that Flying Dragon is a much cooler name.

tsimmonds -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/19/2004 11:34:58 PM)

You can't make up names like these:

Kalamazoo, Passaconaway, Quinsigamond, Shakamaxon, Miantonomoh, Monadnock, Agamenticus, Tonawanda, Patapsco, Weehawken, Wachapreague, Caloosahatchee, Hassayampa, Androscoggin, Narraguagas, Ochlockonee, Chattahoochee

....barely scratching the surface. I think these are all named for US rivers.....

Don't know about the others but Weehawken is a city in New Jersey. Maybe an old Indian name.

Mike Wood -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/20/2004 12:00:02 AM)

Hello...

Used to swimming at Lake Quinsigamond, when a child.

Think It Means 'Cool Water' in Narragansett...

Chattahoochee is definitely a river.

freeboy -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/20/2004 12:17:34 AM)

I was thinking that exact eposode, Enterprise attacks four similar ships, thought the one hit hardest was Lexington, too bad these old shows are not archived online.. maybe I can find a script .

Mr.Frag -> RE: Funniest/Coolest ship names? (8/20/2004 12:19:33 AM)

Always loved the Battleaxe ... leave it to the Brits to name ships after mother'in'laws! [:D]
