Marc_Mitscher -> Great Game (8/25/2004 12:29:51 AM)

Got the game a few weeks back. Just popped in to congratulate the developpers on a great game with a lot of depth. It is very immersive.

I have been dusting off my copies of Samuel E. Morison's "History of U.S. Naval Operations in World War II" and the U.S. OOB seems to be very accurate from what I have seen so far.

Tankerace -> RE: Great Game (8/25/2004 12:35:01 AM)

The only major OOB inaccuracies are really very small, and don't really affect the game too much. All in all, well worth the price paid.

bombata -> RE: Great Game (8/25/2004 12:36:38 AM)

its cool that you are pleased with the game so far.

i bought the game too (after playing UV since release) and my only concern about UV is the poor AI.[&:]

from what i saw in a german forum, the AI in WITP isnt the best and sometimes realy weak.

since i plan to play against Ai most of the time, i would like to know if you, who play the game already, are pleased with the Ai and if there are plans to improve the AI via further patches?

my way to keep my interest on UV is to play one side to a point where the other side (the AI) is realy in a bad situation and then takeing over the Ai side and try to win the game under poor conditions.

bye

Tankerace -> RE: Great Game (8/25/2004 12:38:14 AM)

I only play AI (for now). It can do stupid things, but so far it has given me a game. IMO, the only major problem is it won't do anything ahistorical, so if you know what the enemy did IRL, then you have a good chance of meeting it.

A decent AI, it might seem dumb, but it can still throw a curve ball or two at you.

bombata -> RE: Great Game (8/25/2004 12:47:53 AM)

thanks so far.

when you play at a more challenging difficulty level then historical (hard for example), what are the differences between the hard AI and the historical AI?

i felt in UV that the main differences were the better preformance of enemy AG (AI was just "cheating") and that my ships got much easier system damage when they were on regular operations without enemy contact.

so what are the main differences between a historical and a hard AI in WITP?

bye

Tankerace -> RE: Great Game (8/25/2004 12:50:18 AM)

Historical AI is basically a learning tool. I forget exactly what Hard AI does, but it does get some bonuses, and is a bit smarter. Very Hard AI gets to cheat, by looking at your moves, lots of bonuses, etc.

Marc_Mitscher -> RE: Great Game (8/25/2004 1:18:50 AM)

From what I have seen so far the AI seems fairly competent, about on par with the AI in the Combat Mission games. It plays fairly conservatively and makes some stupid mistakes, but then so did its real life counterparts.

Tristanjohn -> RE: Great Game (8/25/2004 5:51:14 AM)

All told, and considering the vast scope and detail of this title, the AI does a pretty decent job. That's only from a brief spell with it, mind you, and only playing as the Allies. It might fall down somewhat in a more offensive stance playing as the Allies itself, I don't know, but even if so I'd say I've seen worse computer opponents.

For anyone into this period the game's a must buy.

Central Blue -> RE: Great Game (8/25/2004 5:59:14 AM)

Marc...

"dusting off my copies of Samuel E. Morison's 'History of U.S. Naval Operations in World War II'"

that's a *lot* of dusting. I would really like to read it some day. I'm a big fan of "The Two Ocean War." It's always easy to tell who he likes, and who he doesn't like.

weak is a nice description, the AI is very incompetent, not to say useless. Witp is solely a PB(E)M Game, the AI looks like its a necessarity, but not really wanted. Sad to say so.

Tristanjohn -> RE: Great Game (8/25/2004 6:05:38 AM)

Prince, that's pretty much true of all AIs I've encountered in big games and small. Gary's done a fair job offering a playable AI for this monster, as good as most and better than some.

Caltone -> RE: Great Game (8/25/2004 6:09:15 AM)

Playing on hard gives the AI some logistical bonus and occasional looks at your dispositions. Very hard adds some combat bonuses, plus more of what it got on hard.

I play 3 pbems and 1 game vs the AI. PBEM is much more fun but I enjoy my game vs the AI. To get a decent game with the AI, play in a semi historical manner. Don't play as aggressive as humans do in PBEM's, rest and prep your ground units before attacking, rest your ships after major operations, rest and refit air units regularly, and don't make widely ahistorical moves. IOW don't invade Hawaii in the first week [:D]

Maybe true, but as I am a single player , not really have much time for constant PBMs as I could do 30 days a hell of a lot of turn, but then beeing unable to do a single turn for half a year,my playing excitement comes mostly from the AI, and if it`s not a real challenge, then it is useless, at least for me. It would help a lot if it does not waste his APs in attacks against defended targets without any cover. How often did I try to sink the PoW by sending it to Khota Baru? The result was mostly the same, PoW mauled the Jap Invasion force and returned unharmed.

BTW I like this game and don`t regret a single Cent spent for it, but tweaking the AI would give me a lot of more fun ;)

bombata -> RE: Great Game (8/25/2004 1:09:29 PM)

maybe we can get some official statements here.

are there plans to improve the AI ( at least the AI should give some cover to its landing operations like prince said) via patch?

is it possible to improve the AI of such a monster like witp significantly?

bye

I got the 15 volume set from my father as a birthday present when I was 13. Over the years, I have read about half of it. It has been sitting on my bookshelf untouched for at least 10 years. As a general reference on U.S. navy operations in WW2, it is hard to beat.

The next patch will include several improvements to the AI. Things that can be identified and saves provided will be looked at. A list of improvements include:

1. The AI was basing ships at forward bases that had poor air cover; it should be better at this.

2. The Ai was sending TF around Singapore when the Allied player still had strong air units there. This has been worked on.

3. The AI was not reacting to early Allied aggressive move, like taking Iwo early on in the game. The Allied player will get his hand slapped by the AI for doing that after the patch.

If you identify clear trends and have saves, we will work on it.

great news kid.

and thanks for the fast response.

HAI! no more of the Japanese AI loosing 400 ships by 06/01/41 just to supply their bases around Singapore!

The Japanese AI is most grateful for this new patch. The AI Empire is one step closer to victory!

Speaking of "Great Game"

Every time I read about some detail of the War in the Pacific in Real Life and then go try it in the game it works!

I am using C-47s in New Guinea a lot more now both to supply and to reinforce the Aussies. Works about as well as what I read.

The attention to having the right things work for the right reasons in this game (The "Quantum Approach" comment) is fantastic!
