88mmshock -> "Old" scenarios usable of v.7.0/7.1? (2/15/2002 10:53:00 PM)

Are scenarios written for earlier versions of spwaw compatible with v.7.x?

The short answer is: Yes. But it also involves "it all depends ...". The game engine as such will handle the older scenarios pretty well, including campaigns such as Watchword Freedom et al. But the OOB's will give you fits. They have been changed so many times it is nearly impossible - for me at any rate - to make head or tail of the situation. A Tiger E has been dropped in a slot formerly occupied by a MinenRam Pz III. You'll get a MinenRam icon but the data screen is all Tiger E and it will play that way. The beat goes on and on and on ... Best way I guess is to ask around. Many of the designers have revised their scenarios to accomodate v7.0 and you can see lots of them on Fabio's website and elsewhere. Wish we had central control over this issue. Bill Wilder kindly revised the second WF battle for me, am sure he'll gladly furnish the fix to whoever wants it, maybe post it to Fabio. Check the scenario description, open the text file if you can and see if it says revised for v7.0. Shuffle OOB's. You know what we need? An OB Flipper, similar to the great Scenario Wrangler. If you still run into problems, you can open the scenario in Editor, change the weather and then click it back and save, that has made some of the older scenarios usable with updated mech.exe's. How about the scenarios that ship on the lv or wt disk (7.0)? Have they been updated? Will they, at least, be updated for 7.1?

OOB errata was fixed to fit in 5.0. From that changes have been small, but some have changed. They are playable as is if you don't mind in worst case halftrack-icon instead of unit that has moved from one place to other. I am working on Long Long Road to Victory campaign -update, got it started when LV -patch hanged all other activities. I will continue it soon mosh

It is a long term project with me to update all my personal scenarios. There are a lot of them out there and most of them have been pretty much updated. Some still need a touch-up, mainly due to OOB changes. These changes mean that sometimes the wrong unit graphic will appear. I've done this more than once and before the OOBs are brought to a finish as far as changes, I may have to do it again. Such is the price of progress...WB

From what I've seen, most scenarios from v6.1 will play all right in v7 & v7.1, and that's a LOT of scenarios. Everything posted at Redleg's Dirty Dozen page (http://redleg.homestead.com/) was designed in v7 and/or v7.1 (or updated). And all my scenarios, on various support sites, were made in v7 & v7.1. Between these you have a fair number of battles, so you shouldn't run short. (Also, taking old scenarios and updating them is a great way to learn about how the editor works.)

Thanks for the quick reply. Which editor would you use to update the oob's. Thanks.

The Editor whose button shows on the scenario menu page. First, you should try the "change weather" trick and see if that works. If not, replace the incorrect units with the correct ones. For instance, you have an infantry squad whose icon is a halftrack: Click the squad, then click the "R" button and replace the unit with something else, click that back onto the map where the original was, then click the unit again and replace it with the original infantry squad, and again click it back onto the map. This should give you the original squad with the correct icon, etc. This will almost always correct any inconsistencies from old versions. There is an OOB Editor included in the game, but with it you get into a whole different kettle of fish, and I never recommend messing with it unless you really know what's you doing. (For one thing it can screw up PBEM games if both opponents don't have the same OOB's.) Check at Start/Programs/Steel Panthers World At War/SPWaW OOB Editor. (And don't forget to save your old Oob's somewhere, just in case you want them back.) [ February 16, 2002: Message edited by: Warrior ]

As I pointed out earlier - the way I do things, it is often more work to "update" than it is to recreate. It isn't enough (IMO) to load the scenario up and save it in the new version. It needs to be playtested, etc. Often takes several hours.

Tell me about it, Redleg! WB

True, but this is strictly from a designer's point of view. For the player who just wants a fight, the simpler fixes will do.
