I have a large portion of British AK at Karachi on Auto Convoy duty. I understand that auto convoys out of that port handle the Western Portion of the map(lets say the India to the Philipines).

Why do these convoys sail to Pearl to refuel?

Most of the convoys head to pearl to get gas before returing to unload cargo. What gives?

Do I need to make a big fuel base early on like Broome or a port in Java to correct this?

Got the same thing. Karachi to Broome via Pearl Harbor, taking in the sights of Singapore, Phillipines, Truk. Of course japanese aircraft might just have a say. And while were at it the the AI is cr*p.

There are definite problems with the auto-convoy system. (There's debate on this, of course.) I don't use it at all. When the first convoy the AI created sent four 7k AKs from SF to a Canadian port that already had 50k supplies, I was done with it. Easier for me to establish a few intermediate supply depots, stock them with a couple AKs, and then check all bases every few turns to see if they need some beans.

Yeah, the auto-convoy routine isn't so hot. Plus there's that bug up north that screws with TFs out of SF to worry about. I imagine this will all get a substantial overhaul by the time the patch comes out. Hope so, anyway. It's next to useless as it stands.

I actually don't consider it next to useless. I find it gives the AI an advantage that it needs. Especially since I'm playing the small scenarios. It will make a convoy and head off to never-never land forcing me to drag it back. I just consider it IJN Special Ops stealing ships and supplies until they are retaken by marines who board the ships at night in specially modified subs.

It's all how you role-play it. [8D]

I find that if you keep the auto convoy on a short leash when playing as the allies it does the job more than adequatly. Of course there are always one or two screw ups but what the hey

DrewMatrix -> RE: Western Convoys Refueling at Pearl Harbor (9/1/2004 2:00:56 AM)

1) instead of autoconvoy try the computer convoy. Set a convoy to load supply in SF, sail to Anchorage. Then click computer control. It will keep doing that over and over.

2) Make another (smalller) convoy, maybe 1 small ship. Set that Anchorage to Kiska.

3) Look at them maybe once a month.

This will let you control the route more (in short segments to a staging base, preferably one with "no spoilage" (Air + Port >= 10) regional port, then other TFs to feed into smaller bases.

The "look once a month" is important. That prevents massive pile ups or supplies or feeders going to an empty port.
