thefish7 -> PH Question (8/31/2004 4:37:51 PM)

I just started a scenario as the Japanese, and had what I thought was a strange result at Pearl Harbor. My planes blew the hell out of the bases, but not a single ship was hit. I don't think I changed any orders... anybody experienced anything like this?

Toro -> RE: PH Question (8/31/2004 4:57:45 PM)

Could be fog of war. You would only see any hint of results during the bombing of PH. I'm sure you hit something, assuming you left first turn options on.

thefish7 -> RE: PH Question (8/31/2004 5:26:13 PM)

That's what I thought was probably going on. I do have fog of war on. I also have the historical turn one concept. I generally skip the bombing animations (of ground targets)... If I do this will I have also skipped the air-naval combat animations also?

Another interesting thing that popped up was the US carriers tried to attack my carriers as they returned to Japan. Being a noob I hadn't changed my bombers orders away from port attack, so though the US carriers were spotted they weren't attacked. When the US raid arrived I had all of my Zeros up in CAP (basically), so 74 Zeros destroyed every attacking US plane (losing 2 in the process). Unfortunately I never found the US carriers to finish them off... Thought it was kinda weird that I even ran into them.

Toro -> RE: PH Question (8/31/2004 5:33:02 PM)

But also one of the interesting aspects of the AI -- it will do some things unexpectedly (and before everyone jumps in and changes the tone of this post: not as unexpectedly as a human in PBEM, ya ya ya).

Note that the animations for the attack on PH Turn 1 is not like an attack at sea, so you won't see the planes stack up against individual ships. This is an attack on a port, so the animation is nothing more than "squadron x bombing run" with a line note saying "Bomb hit on Arizona" etc, etc.

thefish7 -> RE: PH Question (8/31/2004 5:36:36 PM)

Ahhhh! That explains it... If I skipped the animation I wouldn't have seen all those bomb hit reports.

Toro -> RE: PH Question (8/31/2004 5:38:31 PM)

Right. However, I think the hits still should appear in the combat results report (have to check that). Also, you won't necessarily get "sunk" results on the intel screen right away -- that can take many, many days.

Same happeneed here, except all my zeros were still on escort.

3 Carriers sunk off midway, 6 Months early [:D], I restarted the game immediately.

Toro -> RE: PH Question (8/31/2004 5:42:23 PM)

Ah, you shouldn't have! All those carriers are immediately (re)placed into the build list. It just means you get a few extra months to run rampant. Now, as to whether the AI is a match against an overly aggressive human, that's another forum topic...

Kereguelen -> RE: PH Question (8/31/2004 5:52:39 PM)

I think he meant Japanese carriers. They never return! But why restart? Japan could not restart after Midway...!

I did [:D]

I did consider it, but it was like my 3rd game and i was still learning, and i didnt particually want to learn to play the game without a 1/3rd of my carriers.

Im now on March 42 on my following campaign and have decided not to restart under any circumstances.

Kereguelen -> RE: PH Question (8/31/2004 6:02:07 PM)

Well, I did some restarts too[:)]. But only to optimize distribution of assets for PBEM[;)]. Hopefully it will help, since there will be no restart[:D]

mogami -> RE: PH Question (8/31/2004 11:09:59 PM)

Hi, Against the AI you can restart a game or rerun a turn (after changing orders) as much as you like. (You can do what ever makes playing the game more fun. ) In a PBEM game you have to be more careful but that is why you play against the AI before starting PBEM.
I bet players who get caught with their groups still on port attack by AI are very careful to change them in their PBEM games. It would be a hard sell to convince most PBEM players that the "obvious blunder" rule should be invoked.

Just do what we do at golf. You can buy a Mulligan (redo). For $25 [:D]
