Well today is the anniversary of when the Declaration of War occurred but there were many events leading up to this that can be considered part of the war in many minds such as the Spanish Civil War, Lebensraum events, etc.

Unless you are Chinese, Manchurian, Japanese or (maybe) Russian in which case you know the fighting started about 1937.

Wrong, it was the invasion of Poland, WWII started Sept. 3rd or 4th.

Well as noted above many consider the start of the war some time before the Polish campagine, realy the actions in China by the Japanese in mind at least mark the begining, with other incedents like the Spanish Civial war, and the Italian Campagine in Ethieopia as other markers.

The Allied Powers didn't declare war until September 3rd. So, while the catylist for war began today, WW2 actually began in 2 days from now.

The most coherent view of WWII that I know is the official Communist view. The war began in China about 1935 or '37. It ended in 1947 when Mao drove Chiang from the mainland.

"WWII" was an attempt by the counter-revoutionary powers to destroy world Communism. That attempt failed and WWII ended with the Soviet, Warsaw Pact and Chinese communist parties controlling everything from mid-Germany east to the Pescadores.

At least that is a coherent view of what the Capitalist Running Dog Imperialists see as a bunch of separate conflicts. The fact that the Capitalist Imperialist Running Dogs didn't see it as one big struggle while the Glorious Workers Parties did is one reason the Glorious Workers Parties won.

Of course some people believe that WWII ended with Polands freedom in 1989, thus ending Polands 50 year struggle with Facisim and Communism.

Since the avowed purpose of the war was to free Poland, there is a lot to be said for your version!
The Pacific war must still be going on, since China is not precisely free.[8|]

Don't think so. I know a vet who chose the branch of service he volunteered for based on the queue length. The Army had the shortest so he signed as a Combat Engineer. Reason why the line length mattered? He said he had a beer on the go and did not want it getting warm.

Ended up on a hill in Korea alongside the PPCLI.

The guy I am working with today is English and was 8 years old in 1939. He says it was definitely the 3rd of September. He remembers what they were doing those few days in early September.

Unlike Canada, USA is not an elected dictatorship.
Of course in WWI, Canada did not declare war.
I am Canadian and we need an elected, equal, effective Senate.
Of course WWII could have been avoided if Britain and France stood up to Hitler at Munich or the Rhineland.

Oh My Gawd!! Someone understood my humour.[:D] My grandfathers are really pissed off over our country's present loss of heritage as my whiskey stash is all gone!

I've only recently been embarassed about being Canadian. It has little with saying yes/no to our political friends and neighbours and has more to do with internal politics. Sad state of affairs.[8|]

Did it formally end? Theoretically not, as Japan and Soviet Union signed only an armistice, so formally the state of war between two countries still exists. Japs say, that they will not sign peace treaty until Russians give back Kuriles.

And the date of the beginning of WWII depends on the point of sitting[:)]. Even in my country it is strongly debated. For many years it was said, that the "Schleswig-Holstein" started the war, however few minutes earlier Luftwaffe's bombers destroyed the city of Wielun (and this fact, as many others about the Defensive War of 1939 were wringed by comunists...).

Well, the attack on Poland was planned to launch on 25th of August, but postponed only a few hours before. Some special units didn't receive the new order and attacked...and were killed.
