'Class' was the most produced warship design. I don't want to hear about landing craft, rubber boats or DUWK's! [:D] Has to be a fighting ship design. If any one else has questions please hijack the thread header and continue as I need more research..... Answers on a postcard........

I got this up to 1815... HMS Crusier The Cruiser class of 18 gun brig of war was the largest class of warship of their time. In all 103 of the class were built, from the Cruiser of 1797 to the Zebra of 1815. This class of ship played a very active roll during the Napoleonic wars, being used for escort duty, reconnaissance and attacking enemy convoys and inshore raids. As originally built the Cruiser had eighteen 6 pounder carriage guns but this was later changed to sixteen 32 pounder caronades and two 6 pounder carriage guns.

The most numerous variant of the Type VII was the VIIC with 591 completions. The flushdeckers beat out the Fletchers with 280 completions, but that's divided into three classes, to be technical. There were 502 YMS craft, 435 SC 497 class, about 654 Fairmile "B" launches, 6200 Shinyos....

If you consider a "warship" to be one built specifically for war service and carrying some armament, you could make a case for the US Liberty Ships.

Just wondering about the rest now, including my own Flower class!!! Does anybody have the definition of a boat and a ship handy???? [:D]

Here are some more of the super-numerous designs: British MFV1 class, 354 completions British MFV601 class, 333 completions British MFV1001 class, 216 completions German KFK class, 630 completions German Seehund type, 285 completions German Molch type, 393 completions German Biber type, 324 completions German Neger type, about 200 completions German Marder type, about 300 completions US 37ft type picket boat, about 460 completions US 38ft type picket boat, about 550 completions US 45ft type picket boat, about 470 completions US 63ft type crash boat, 600+ completions, but I have no idea how many were armed.

Other than Subs Right or wrong I've used the following: Ship - anything that was designed for use on the open sea. Boat - one that not. [8\|]Being ex RN you could get keel-hauled for calling a ship a boat.

Wikipedia just provides a rule of thumb: Link: Ship quote: A rule of thumb saying (though it doesn't always apply) goes: "a boat can fit on a ship, but a ship can't fit on a boat". Often local law and regulation will define the exact size (or the number of masts) which a boat requires to become a ship.

The most plausible definition I ever came across was that a ship has more than one deck (not counting any weather deck), while a boat does not. So a submarine, not having multiple decks, is a boat, while a vessel with a built-up superstructure or multiple decks within its hull is a ship. I have also come across a definition to the effect that the smallest vessel possible is a boat. If there is a vessel that cannot carry this boat on board, that vessel is also a boat. A vessel that can carry a boat is a ship.

I did not intend to disparage the gallant Minnow, or her fearless crew. Minnow has to be a ship because the original version of the song sounds much better than: Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a tour afloat That started from this tropic port, Aboard this average boat.

It is probably bigger and more expensive than a corvette.
