Pg 99 of manual states "...shot at by Coast guns, artillery and other light weapons such as mortars and AA guns. .... in addition to shots at the ships, troops are shot at seperatly by all enemy weapons."

I'm guessing that you sent the transports in without any fire support. As in real life this is likely to produce a slaughter.

Mersing has an evil Aussie brigade there. One of the best units in Malaya. If you are going to hit Mersing, send a BB equipped bombardment group there too.

Just thought I'd mention the obvious since you would look to be a newcomer.

Any landings must be supported by combat ships to suppress the defender fire. Plan on at least 5 ships included with your transport ships to play this critical roll.

The manual doesn't really tell you how critical this is. A couple of ships can make the difference between 500 and 10000 losses.

The number shown is not real, it just gives you an indication of how well suppressed then defenders were. If you see a 4 digit number *ever*, you basically walked into a firing squad with blindfolds on.

Proper suppression will reduce that number into the low hundreds.

Would PC's, PG's and MSW's be enough, or do I need DD's, CL's and CA's ???

I would have thought that airpower would suppress defendes enough.

Depends what you are up against, but any ship with guns helps out. Try it out, experiment. One of the great things about computers is they don't mind if you do it again and again till you get it right [;)]

Air power will reduce the defenders, it will not alter the outcome of a landing unless you are talking weeks of constant abuse. Air power is far more effective at preventing the ships from making it to the beaches then stopping the grunts from coming out of their fox holes after the aircraft leave and shooting at you. Very tough (even with today's weapons) to suppress grunts.
