How do you guys go about protecting your battleships from the vicious japanese subs?
All it takes is one torpedo (one sub attack, actually, for the japanese subs hardly ever miss) and then one of my BBs is crippled and has to crawl all the way back to San Francisco for painfully slow repairs...
I've tried putting lots of DDs into the TF, I've tried creating large ATW TFs and have them follow the BB TF around, I've tried to ATW sweep my BBs intended path to and from the target - but still one or two of those d... subs get through and put a hole or two in one of my BBs. I've lost one BB and had to withdraw three others for repairs (all to torpedo attacks) in three weeks of fighting around Rabaul. And I haven't even used them very much...
So, any good advice...? I'm down to one BB now - and I won't even think about trying to take Rabaul without the aid of a really powerful bombardment TF...
Torpedo-armed Bettys are also a pain - but having my long ranged Lightnings flying CAP over the BBs is helping a lot. But I just can't seem to do anything really effective about those sporadic - but deadly - sub attacks...
