Kriegspiel? Very early game, played in squares not hexes?

Steve.

carnifex -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 6:17:07 PM)

Mine was Third Reich (starting easy, right? lol). Bought it when I was age 12 because the box cover had planes and soldiers and stuff.

Took a while to learn the rules. Meanwhile I would play with my cousin just for fun, setting up every single counter on the board and free offensive options for everyone. :)

Mr.Frag -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 6:26:52 PM)

AH's Jutland, 1974 ... god that was a lot of money back then! Took over the basement! [:D]

brisd -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 6:39:24 PM)

I had most of the AH games listed. My first wargames were in 1975, I believe they were AH's Tactics 2 (which I quickly set aside), Stalingrad and Blitzkrieg. My first computer wargame was SSI's (GG's) Computer Bismarck.
Most were played solo, I never really got into too many face-to-face games, AH's Third Reich, The Russian Campaign and some of the SSI Napoleanic operational games (Waterloo series) come to mind.

Hammer2001 -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 6:43:57 PM)

Avalon Hillīs "Afrika Korps" and "Midway", in early 80īs. I donīt remember wich one first. Those were very dificult to find at that time on my country, Spain.

tsimmonds -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 6:55:48 PM)

Seapower II with 1:1200 scale miniatures, starting in 1968. Halsey and I and a couple other buds had hundreds of the things.... Many wonderful Jutland-style duels to the death with WWII era ships from all nations....

Chaplain -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 6:57:35 PM)

My first wargame was a folio game from SPI called 'Antietam' in 1975. I was 12 years old and already interested in history (reading Catton) and I thought it was a magazine on the battle. I got home and opened it, realized it was a game, and sat at the table all night figuring it out.

From there, I was hooked.

Next came Afrika Korps, then SPI's Leipzig, then Waterloo, Gettysburg, and a slow graduation into the "hard stuff" (A3R, ASL, et al).

*sigh* "Memories ... "

dday -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 7:07:28 PM)

Gosh, I missed War in the East, huge maps (6 in all) and over 2,000 pieces. We used the pool table to play it, and then Jutland was played on the floor. Computer game, I guess it was Midway. [8|]

Zeta16 -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 7:22:09 PM)

Mine was UV, but I did have Victory at sea, but it never worked so I don't count that.

watchtower -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 7:26:45 PM)

Boardgame - Axis and allies
computer - Atari 800 game like squad leader where you had a board map and counters but the puter calculated the moves and combat - I played that to death.

kew -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 7:36:38 PM)

When I was younger my father had a nationaly syndicated newspaper computer game column. As you can imagine we had every computer gamer ever made come into our house. I think the time frame was early 1980s to mid 1990s \

I can't remember tall of the games but the ones that come to mind the most were:

Wizardry (text based)
Ultima
Zelda
Battle of Britain, I remember ths computer game came with board.
Any Gary Grisby games!!!![&o] my favs were War in Russia and Pacific War!!!
North Atlantic 86'
Rapid Deployment Force

Of course the games my dad was getting from the reps at that time were all Beta's so they had a tendancy to be a bit buggy to say the least. I remember him going to the office At the Atlanta Journel and Constitution every few months with three or four huge trash bags of games, as he descibed the scene was at times very chaotic and disruptice at work what with himwalking in with games galore for everyone. He had to get rid of them because he was getting upwards of five games a day, no room for all of them!

So growing up for me was kinda like a kid in computer game paradise.[:D]

Central Blue -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 7:39:48 PM)

my brother came home from college with Blitzkrieg and Gettysburg by AH. That was mid-60's. First satisfactory computer game I remember was Harpoon. There was some small unit Nato thing before that.

SKillelea -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 7:49:57 PM)

First games beyond Risk were:

Boardgame: Flattop
Computer Games: Carrier Force, Guadalcanal Campaign and Kampfgruppe

Oh those heady days of youth.

I think Guadalcanal Campaign was the first complete addiction I had - a buddy of mine and I would hot seat that one for hours on end on my old Apple II+... Kampfgruppe was a close second though.

Capt Cliff -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 9:21:13 PM)

1914, but I can't remember if it was AH or SSI. AH I think. Oh,...1969!

Oznoyng -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 9:23:40 PM)

I've played/owned a lot of wargames. Probably Warpwar and Starfire were the first, but I am not sure they would be classified as wargames. If not, Rise and Decline would probably be the first true wargame I played. Others I've played: Dark Nebula, Starfire, Warp War, Tactics II, Rise and Decline of the 3rd Reich, Quatre Bras, Europa, Siege of Jerusalem, Titan, Shell Shock, Risk/Shogun/Axis and Allies/LotR Risk, Harpoon, Airforce, Dauntless, AirWar

and probably another dozen or more I can't recall atm.

byron13 -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 9:24:08 PM)

AH's Midway - 1972

Thilo -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 9:30:05 PM)

Computer: C64 "Battle for normandy", then "knigts of the desert", "carrier force" , "carriers at war", and a turn-based dogfight-simulation from SSI with some interesting aspects.
boardgame: Flat Top

cool games, even now, when played on a c64-emulator.

hithere -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 9:59:38 PM)

first board...mech warrior (commander?) and star fleet battles
fist computer - Germany 84 (c-64) and carrier strike (PC),
carrier strike was my fav for many years....i wish i could still play it...it is the bad thing about getting better computers
great naval battles of the north atlantic was also one of the good ones i loved

Tankerace -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 10:02:18 PM)

My first board game was Axis and Allies, and my first computer/console was the original Pacific Theater of Operations by Koei, for the Sega Genesis. I wish I never sold that game, it was sweet.

Greco, Thomas A -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 10:07:41 PM)

Tactics II by Avalon Hill (1962). Who could believe 15 pages of instructions! Last board game was SPI's War in Europe. Thank God for computers. I had War in Europe in the guest room and War in the Pacific in the garage, both at the same time. Then I got married and you probably know the rest.

Skyros -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 10:27:57 PM)

Stalingrad in 1972, followed by Afrika Korps and D-Day. I probably own over 50 or sixty games including my S&Ts. Saw my first monster game, War Between the States, at the MIT Strategic Game Society in the middle seventies. I also learned to play Naval miniatures and D&D with that group.

caslug -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 11:20:51 PM)

Either Tactics or Kreigspiel was the first boardgame. Graff Spee on an apple computer in Jr. High for my first computer game.

Knaust -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 11:30:07 PM)

My first C64 game?....Gary Grigsby's War in the South Pacific.[:)]
My first computer game?...Gary Grisby's Pacific War[8|]

first pc game was Red Storm Rising or Red Lightening by SSI in 1989.

all dates are subject to a plus or minus factor of 1 year based on my age.

captskillet -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/16/2004 11:39:13 PM)

The Atomic Games "World at War" series was/is another good one. The Gold Juno and Sword game/sceanario was a great one...terrific battle around Caen between the Brits/Canadians (my old gaming buddy) and myself with only the 21st PZ, the 12th SS and Panzer Lehr and a few other ragtag units to stop him with [:D] !!! The Crusader and Stalingrad segments were also great. Anyone take Stalingrad?????

As far as the first person shooter type genre the only ones worth playing were the WWII flying games especially the Lucas series Battle of Britain, Weapons of the Luftwaffe (nothing like flying a Tub on a strafing mission or a 262 against those nasty B-17's [;)] ) and I forget what the South Pacific version was called and I think it was the first in the series ( that was also great flyimng a Dauntless and dropping an egg on the Soryu [:D] )

CMDRMCTOAST -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/17/2004 12:20:30 AM)

My first favorite war game was Task force 1942, plays and looks
a lot like UV except you could enter the battleships and take over
firing on the enemy with the big guns.

Titanwarrior89 -> RE: What was your first wargame? (9/17/2004 12:23:04 AM)
