Greco, Thomas A -> Handbook for the Recently Departed (9/16/2004 7:52:15 PM)

Does anyone else think that the manual sometimes reads like the handbook from Betelgeuse? I'm in an PBEM game playing the Japs. Three allied TFs were spotted within easy range of my LBA and not one of 317 bombers flew. I checked the manual frantically looking for what I was doing wrong and I know the answers were in there, but damn if I could find them. Could one of you expert types put together a simple checkist , like pilots use, that would tell us newbies what it takes to fly missions? How about LBA v TF, LBA v ground units (another real headache) and finally Cv air v TFs. I'd really like some simple lists that I could print, three hole punch and put in the front of my manual. Failing that could you tell me where in the now hundreds of threads the above answere lie? Eternal gratitude awaits from many more than just me.

To kill enemy TFs...

1. What is the range of your bombers? Within normal range is fine, but there are penelties to the chance to fly, and the total number of aircraft on the mission if at extended range.
2. Make sure your "max range" setting for the sqdn isn't set to 0 or something like that (usu good to keep it at extended range, but there are plenty of reasons for changing it). But if you do change it, don't forget that you -did- change it.
3. Do you have escorting fighters? Medium (2e) bombers won't usu attack a TF (esp CV) that has CAP. Yes the will sometimes attack a TF with CAP (esp if it's LRCAP from another base), but any CAP diminishes your chances of striking it. You'll generally need escorts to fly against a CV TF. Heavy bombers (4e), don't really give a rat's ass about CAP, and will fly against whatever they want.
4. What is the condition of your airfield? Just make sure it's not shot up.
5. What is the SIZE of the AF. A common new mistake is to put your Medium and Heavy bombers at Lvl(2) AF. The mediums will only rarely fly from there, and the Heavies never will.
6. What is the morale of your pilots? Moral below 50 means additional (considerable) chances that the mission won't fly.
7. What is weather like over your base -and- the target hex. Fould weather on either side of the equation will likely scrub it.
8. How well is the TF spotted? Bombers like to launch on more than the staticy transmission of a coast watcher. Make sure some patrols have corrobberated the report.
9. How good is the sqdn commander. One with a Leadership rating of 40 is far suckier than one that has a rating of 60. As I recall, leadership affects your chances of actually launching, Inspiration affects the quality of the attack (but I could be wrong).

Cheers.

Betty's from Rabaul at level 4, good weather, escorted by A6M's at extended range, Allied CV spotted for 2 turns, 50 Bettys, 27 Zeros, range at maximum for each, altitude,7000 for bombers 10000 for escort. 13500 in supplies with 3000 required, Av Support of 30 more than required. Target is single CV escorted by BB and CA's. Each turn it sank 3-5 AK's supplying Lunga and I never attacked once.

Sounds like you've got it pretty well covered. If I had to guess it was either...

1. Weather over Rabaul or Target.
2. Fatigue/Morale of sqdns.

It also sounds like your PBEM opponent is baiting you, it's what I would do.

He wants to draw your bombers out with minimal escorts (your Zeros are at a penalty for extended range). His CAP will eat your bombers alive (and probably the few zeros also), and knock your teeth out because they'll have few or no escorts. Then you'll be mad, and nobody likes that.

Personally, I'd set the bombers max range to the normal range of Zeros, so that he can't pull this off (and thus anialate your bombers).

The same holds true of your Kates/Vals/Zeros. Your Vals are the longest range. It's an old UV (Allied) trick to lure them out with minimal escorts and then have your CAP slaughter them. Knavey got really p1ssed when I did that to him. He didn't make that mistake again...[;)]

<smiles and nods> remind me to tell you about the time where 4 squads of dauntless bombers sat on the carrier deck will the strike of two scout planes....

I believe this is what the original poster was asking for. I created this some weeks back when I was having problems getting LBA to fly.

Yes, thats exactly what I wanted. Much thanks. I just read your entire thread and its gratifying to see that I was not alone. Hopefully Matrix will include your check list in its next patch.

Once the 1.3 patch comes out I will update that document on the board. Kid let slip another Limitation in the preview for the patch about limits on the range for Ground Attacks by Level Bombers.

Count the hexes between Rabaul and the enemy CV.. If its more than 11 the Betties will not fly as they will have no fighter cover... A smart allied player stage their TFs just out of fighter range, which means most bombers will not attack.

I had the same problem during my invasion of Rabaul... A US TF sat a fex hexes to the south of Rabaul - in perfect range for my Nells at Truk, but to far for the zeros... So nothing attacked them. Also, set som of your Betties to naval search, that seems to help the unit conduct attacks if its own spotters find the target.
