Can anyone recommend the best treatments of the Normandy campaign. I know of the basic standbys, but have only read a couple and am interested in a few more with your endorsements.

Thanks.

Johnnie,

If you'd like to see some excellent on line volumes check out this thread at Run5

The one in particular of interest is Cross Channel Attack

Max Hastings - Overlord for sure. Really an excellent book.

I am reading Carlo D'Este - Decision In Normandy at the moment. A bit drier, but very interesting on the British situation.

Here you go,

THe above mentioned book is an excellant read plus these!!!

D-DAY - STEPHEN E AMBROSE

D-DAY, THE FIRST 72 HOURS - WILLIAM F BUCKINGHAM

THE BATTLE OF NORMANDY 1944 - ROBIN NEILLANDS

THE GERMAN ARMY @ D-DAY - VARIOUS,EDITED BY DAVID C ISBY

BEYOND THE BEACHHEAD, (THE 29TH INF IN NORMANDY) - JOSEPH BALKOSKI

AFTER D-DAY (OPERATION COBRA AND THE BREAKOUT) - JAMES JAY CARAFANO

D-DAY is kind of my favorite WWII period.

John Keegan: Six Armies in Normandy - a great read if somewhat outdated

Niklas Zetterling: Normandy 1944; German Military Organization, Combat Power and Organizational Effectiveness - excellent and thorough book attacking a lot of the myths concerning the campaign in Normandy. Based on analyses of primary sources instead of popular notions dating back to shortly after the war.

The follow up to "Cross Channel Attack", entitled "Breakout and Pursuit" is also great.
