Yes, so his roving Carrier TF's have some BIG juicy targets to hit[;)]

Yeah, there is that problem too. [:D]

Luckily there isn't going to be too many long distance trips at this point. It is doubtful if Zeta will even bother with the Solomons, Gilberts, Marshalls, and Carolines. He is probably heading straight for the Marianas or the Philippines.

WiTP_Dude -> RE: Midway Falls (12/22/2004 7:40:11 AM)

The Japs are approaching 40,000 points in the bag. It's just a guess, but I think you will need around 150,000 points in the end to get the automatic victory.

Zeta16 -> RE: Midway Falls (12/22/2004 7:40:45 AM)

I don't know where I am headed yet. I am looking at intel to figure that out [;)]

WiTP_Dude -> RE: Midway Falls (12/22/2004 7:42:58 AM)

Do you save all the signal reports and compile them into useful data? They would probably work better that way.

I have a few surprises in India. You may take the bases, but I don't think you will get all of the troops.

I don't copy the file. I made a thing with all the bases that come up in the intel and made a chart and check it each turn to see if anything new comes up. the best thing is when it tells me what units are on what ships and where they are headed [:D]

You can ship them if you want at the last minute. I don't care, as long as I can link up with the Germans in Iran. [8|]

In real life the troops would just fall back towards Iran and I guess the British by this point in the war would send more troops there.
That is the thing in Siberia the Russians would not have quit at Isturk, they would have just blown the rail lines behind them and moved closer to mid USSR and more troops. But I understand that this is a game and we have to live with these things [:D]

In real life, I suspect Stalin would have found more troops amd the Russians would be counting Japanese corpses in Korea. I was surprised how easily the Japanese took out the Russians.
What tanks did the Russians have??
Also given total air superiority at Irkutsk, the Russians shouldn't have gone down that easily too. Air attack against troops engaged in attacking operations should IMHO cause more casualties.

Ground combat at Midway
Allies gain control of Midway after brutal four week fight.

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 79194 troops, 603 guns, 93 vehicles

Defending force 13760 troops, 40 guns, 0 vehicles

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 5

Allied assault odds: 16 to 1 (fort level 5)

Allied forces CAPTURE Midway base !!!

Any of you military history buffs out there want to give me a few examples of atolls that took 4 weeks to capture?

BTW - what was the record for the most Allied ships hit/damaged/sunk by land-based artillary in any invasion in the Pacific, atoll or island?

Thanks -

Ron Saueracker -> RE: Midway Falls (12/22/2004 2:21:49 PM)

Shouldn't this AAR be setting alarm bells ringing? It's like a demolition derby with no limits. The game is just not capable of emulating realistic pace of operations.[X(]

jnier -> RE: Midway Falls (12/22/2004 3:40:03 PM)

The increased pace of operation is partially due to game mechanics that could be improved (e.g. rail movement). But much of it is due to players' lack of caution. This is a problem in *every* wargame. Players are going to be more reckless and less patient than their historical counterparts. When your landing at New Zealand fails in WITP only us geeks who read the AAR care, but if such a debacle happened in real life there would, of course, be dire consquences.

The fact that this is a *game* and not real life is a very big reason for the pace of operations.

It would be cool that if a major debacle happened, the game relieves you of command in that theatre, and only a huge penalty payment of PPs could buy back the theatre from the AI. Considering just how popular the AI is with us, this would be a major deterrent for careless and reckless endeavours.[:)]

WiTP_Dude -> RE: Midway Falls (12/22/2004 10:32:58 PM)

Four weeks for an atoll isn't wrong given there was no pre-invasion bombing campaign of any sort. Look at this way- you either spend four weeks bombarding the place with air strikes and naval attacks or you spend four weeks fighting on the ground.

The thing is I can not get planes there except carriers. When I used carriers to port attack they did very poor. I am afraid of taking PH becasue I am attacking with a lot of heavy bombers and medium and they are not getting many hits, even with high exp. I feel more comfortable in landing on Islands that are not atolls. I have the schock attack. I had my units for Midway at 100 readiness and not taking it on the first turn means you have to wait a long time to take the place. Also my bombardment seems real poor. I had several battleships and they seemed not to do much.

sveint -> RE: Midway Falls (12/23/2004 1:07:17 AM)

Ignore all non-cruical locations (including PH). Hit him where it hurts (resources,oil,production). If you look closely there are several nice locations you can take from which you can base heavy bombers.

Zeta16 -> RE: Midway Falls (12/23/2004 1:15:56 AM)

The only reason to take PH is becasue it is a huge point swing. I am looking at bases all over the place. The problem still is the amount of Ap's and LST I have at the moment. There never seems to be enough and they take a ton of damage in the landings, even with a bunch of Ca's and Cl's in the landing force.

What you are facing is that ship and plane bombardments are ineffectual versus land-based artillary against ships. If the land-based artillary was as effective against LCUs as it is against ships you would still own China and Siberia. Look at the reports on the invasions of Tawara, for instance - they didn't do a month's worth of bombardments, they hit it and landed, and the land-based artillary was toast almost immediately. Sure, the machine gun nests ate up a lot of the initial landing forces, but it was still taken in 3 days.

You've made several assumptions that aren't really true:

1. Improved artillery performance will help the Chinese.

The Japanese have better artillery than the Chinese. This probably would have caused Chungking to fall sooner than it did rather than later. So I don't know how Zeta would still own China if artillery performance was improved. If anything the Japanese heavy artillery would knock bunches of Chinese units out and rapidly reduce their fighting strength.

2. Land-based artillery destroys ships too easily.

Where are you getting the idea that land based artillery destroyed ships at Midway? There was a base force there with 24 big coastal guns located there. This is what likely caused the sinkings. The invasions that occured at other atolls without these kind of coastal guns usually didn't have many ships sunk. Look at Kona for example.

3. Bombardments aren't neccessary - look at Tarawa.

Tarawa only had 2600 SNLF troops and probably less than level 9 fortifications. Midway in this occasion had two Guard units and one SNLF unit - perhaps the equivalent of 10000 SNLF troops. Not to mention level 9 fortifications and coastal guns.

he right about the guns in China. When I play as the japanese I see the Chinese guns hurt me a whole lot more than the japanese guns, this is not right is it. Bombardments are neccessary but I do not think that they do much at least for me.

Captain Cruft -> Ineffective Naval bombardment (12/23/2004 1:37:20 PM)

I find that naval bombardments are much more effective if you have bumped the DL up by flying Recon missions over the target base beforehand. If you have no land-based Recon planes to hand just use the floatplanes on the cruisers and battleships ...

which would be quite logical. I mean you ain't gonna do much damage if you're gonna land all of those shells at the local golf course..

mogami -> Victory (12/28/2004 9:38:46 AM)

Hi, Required victory ratios are 4-1 in 43 3-1 in 44 and 2-1 in 45/46. So if Japan has 40k points the Allies need 160k in 43, 120k in 44 and 80k in 45/46
Of course the Allies can reduce the Japanese total while adding to their own by taking bases.
