The biggest picture ever posted to the Matrix forums.

What are we naming? I'll take the easy one, the M1 Garands. Its not on the Canal (If on the Canal, they'd be using M1903A3s, so I'll say the Marshalls?

They appear to be wearing Army HBT uniforms rather than Marine utilities. You can see a 13-star button just above and to the rear of the second soldier's wrist. This would be the button for the pocket flap.

Also the packs are either the 1910 or 1928 haversack used by the army. There are only small differences between the two and they are not visible in these photos. The meat can pouch on the soldier in the front looks more like the earlier 1910 model to me though.

Also visible is the early T-handle shovel on the guy in front, while the second carries a pick mattock rather than a shovel. You can see the end of the pick handle sticking up between the meat can pouch and the haversack.

Good picture.

U.S. Army GIs in a posed photograph "looking alert and combat ready." It's a posed photo because the foreground guy is wearing his piano (backpack) and moreover it is full. They also look pretty clean.

Could have been posed anywhere but they are just scruffy enough for it to be Solomons theater. My guess, the photo was taken some time in 1943, possibly after G'canal was secured but also possibly on Rendova or New Georgia.
