Cantankerous -> Weirdness with American CVE's (9/27/2004 2:20:16 AM)

I've seen some other posts from players about weird things occurring with the airwings of some CVE's, but here are some just plain bizarre happenings that I'm seeing with my American CVE's. (For the record, I'm playing as the Allies on Scenario 15; it is currently late Jan 43.)

1. When the CVE Nassau arrived at San Francisco it was carrying 24xWildcats and 24xDauntlesses. Oddly enough, even though there were only 24 planes in each squadron when they arrived, the squadrons were actually supposed to be size 54. When the planes were offloaded at Noumea, each squadron quickly grew from 24 planes to 50 planes (but oddly enough, never reaching 54 planes despite more than adequate replacements in the pool), so I decided to divide the units. This should have divided the squadrons evenly into 1/3's , each with 18 planes, but to my surprise at the beginning of the next turn each of the newly divided squadrons was shown to be size 54!! This means that two squadrons, each arriving in theater with 24 planes, now had 162 total planes EACH! Is this right?

2. At the beginning of Jan 43, the CVE's Altamaha and Copahee both arrived with 24xHellcats and 24xHelldivers. Why is this? Are these supposed to represent prototypes? The first Hellcats aren't supposed to arrive until Jun 43 (I think), and the Helldivers don't arrive until after that. That means that these squadrons of planes (while outstanding planes) can't even start recieving replacements for months. So why are these four squadrons (two on each CVE) even available at this point?

3. Also note that the two squadrons on the Altamaha and Copahee arrived with 24 planes each, HOWEVER the size of their squadrons are shown to be 54 (the same situation as in #1 above).

Are these above points the way that things are supposed to be? Playing against the AI, you won't hear it complain, but if I were playing the Japanese (especially in a PBEM game) and these oddities were occurring (and weren't supposed to be occurring) I don't think I would be all too happy about it.

Thanks.

1. Can't answer this one. Matrix folks will have to respond. Seems odd to me, too.

2. If Hellcats and Helldivers aren't in the pool, the squadrons will fill out with the prior available planes - ie Wildcats and Dauntlesses.

3. Same as 1. above - bugged, methinks...

Any squadron listed as VR are replenishment squadrons, These VR squadrons are not meant for combat or to be off loaded from the CVE's they arrive with. The VR squadrons are replenishment squadrons meant to replenish your other carriers while underway at sea.

If a carrier needs a few replacement the VR group (if the right type of A/C) will fly off replacements to the carrier if it is in range. If you take them off the CVE's then strange things are likley to happen.
