redwolf -> Running under Linux (Wine or VMware)? (9/28/2004 5:07:01 AM)

Anybody tried to run BiN under Linux, either in Wine, Winex or VMware?

Given that the digital download can't have a copy protected CD which makes Wine fail for KP I have my hopes up. Anybody?

No.

Nor does it run on an Apple.

You need a Windows emulator.

Hi

Yes, I'm afraid, definitely need a Windows emulator...I'm running BiN perfectly in OSX using VirtualPC 6 on a PowerMac G4 1.25GHz and PowerBook G4 1GHZ.

As to Virtual PC 6 -

Which version of Windows is it virtually runnuing? XP for home, XP professional, somthing else?

Windows 98SE - I think the performance of XP in VirtualPC on my (quite low spec) G4s would be atrocious!

But W98 does do very well on handling all my wargaming needs on my Macs! John Tiller's HPS games seem to run OK, and Shrapnel Games' Combat Command, and KP/BiN. Even HTTR will run and is playable but a little sluggish.

I think as soon as you move from turn-based to real-time you start to run into performance issues.

Haven't tried WitP on it yet though!

Well, if it runs on one emulator chances are it runs in other emulators as well, the problems are usually the same.

Question: I have seen references that you need a CD burner for the digital download. Does that mean you need a CD to play after all, that you have to have the CD in the drive to answer a PBEM move?

IanAM -> RE: Running under Linux (Wine or VMware)? (9/28/2004 3:01:20 PM)

Hmmmm...not so sure...with VirtualPC you have a whole 'disk image' of a full windows installation which then launches as a virtual windows machine, with emulated hardware.

AFAIK other emulators like Wine don't go to those lengths to get windows apps to run and take more shortcuts to provide an environment in which some apps work.

That's right for Wine, but VMware runs a complete Windoze with emulated hardware.

But in general, some games fail in VMware in the CD copy protection, and then they don't have a chance in Wine. If it runs in VMware then the chance that it runs in Wine is much better.

What about the CD issue, do you really burn a CD which will be required for gameplay after the digital download?

IanAM -> RE: Running under Linux (Wine or VMware)? (9/28/2004 3:22:29 PM)

No, you don't need a CD for gameplay - just install BiN from downloaded file and go! Copy protection is via your serial number, which you need for the installation.

Hi guys,

Sorry to sound nitpicking, but according to the definition, Wine Is Not an Emulator.

Wine provides an implementation of the Windows(tm) API under Linux. With all the aleas ...

VMWare does not emulate hardware either. VMWare creates a virtual machine that permits you to run, for example, another operating system (or just the same if you like).

OTOH, VirtualPC is a x86 hardware emulation on a Mac. If done well, no doubt that any windows game can run, provided the graphic hardware is correclty emulated (which is less and less a problem, considering Apple uses now standard graphic chips).

I would be surprised if Wine makes you run a game better than under VMWare.

BTW, considering the cost of both VMWare and VirtualPC, I guess you're not of the ones who gripes about the price of BIN.

Cheers,

JeF.

It's good to hear about BIN working on Macs and possibly in other environments as well. As for the CD question, you definitely don't need a CD in any drive to play to the game. There is no CD based copy protection. However, it's not a bad idea to back up your installation file on some more permanent media, just in case, or if you want to install it on a laptop or some other machine of yours.

I already have VMware, I can use it for more than one thing ;)

Not to be counternickpicking, but VMware is a pretty complete emulator. It does skip the emulation of the actual userlevel CPU but it emulates a lot of hardware,, namely all the disk and network stuff, simulates a graphics card and I think it even emulates the MMU (not sure).

Wine, when it runs something (not that it runs anything for me but RDOA, but let's theorize), is substancially faster and not such a bitch to run as VMware is. You run a full Windoze inside VMWare and it is the full babysitting, plus the virtual networking. Before VMware 4.x you also have to use network drives inside your PC which is kind of contraintuitive.

Be even nicer if a native OSX (con)version was released[:)]
