Nordic Twilight -> UK Release? (9/28/2004 12:50:19 PM)

I have looked through the forum but cannot find the answer to this question. Is War in the Pacific available in UK? I have been into several retail companies ( Game, EB etc ) and the assistants just look at me blankly when I ask about the game, and when they check their release dates nothing comes up. Is the game available ( and where?? ), or will I have to order the game from the US??[&:]

It's only available through the online store. Just click 'store' (next to home at the top of the page) and select the uk shop.

And remember Nordic Twilight, think, think twice, and then think again :).
The pricing policies/methodologies/customs inside Europe are not always the same as the rest of the world.

For instance, the game is listed at a US price intially, but I know it will be different to me, as I am a Canadian.
To me it is a 92 dollar purchase (92 dollars to me though).

It is a digital download, hence that is the primary means it is assumed to come in.

Thus, a box a manual a cd, these are not defacto automatic. And not always automatically included (and I am just parroting what long term members already know to be the case, I am not an official Matrix Games voice).

It is becoming fast the policy of Matrix Games, to sell all but a VERY select few games only through the online purchase option. More and more Matrix Games titles are being withdrawn from employing the retail shelf means of distribution.

Oh, and you actually expected to get informative responses from a game store clerk?
On a fringe gaming hobby?
About a game that has only been out a short time?

Must be nice where you live :)
Here in Ontario, the only question I expect answered intelligently by a clerk (at a game store), is what are the store's normal business hours. Anything more involved than that seems to exceed their knowledge base (must have something to do with their wage level).

The game is only available from the online Matrix store[:(]. Be aware that the price quoted (Ģ38.99 for the digital download, more if you want the game cd in a box) does not include VAT.

You do occasionally get a suprise when you talk to staff in shops when they are on the same wavelength as you, but it does not happen very often[;)]

edit:- Can anyone clarify what the difference is between the products PC CDROM and Digital & CD ROM? Is the Digital & CD ROM product there for the people who cannot wait for the order to be shipped? Do you get a manual with both products??

Can anyone offer guidance to the above question?? I've checked out Customer Services, received no reply from them after two emails, and the self help part is a bit vague

Well PC and CD Rom is likely just a trade term (because if it isn't PC, then it might be mistaken as a console product).

Digital is not about impatience though, Digital is when you WON'T be finding it on a retail shelf ever, or in other words, if you don't buy it by download, and don't ask for the download to be mailed burned to cd, then you can't get it.

Manuals and cds in all cases, are not defacto inherent in your purchases.

If you buy Digital, and do not specifically request cd, you don't get the cd.

Most games are moving to manual on cd. There is no reason to "assume" there will ever be a manual with every game any more.

I have several games from Matrix Games for instance.
Eric Young Squad Assault and Highway tot he Reich. Both bought retail shelf method, both obviously in box, with cd and with full manual.
I have Uncommon Valour. DVD case, cd and a limited manual, full manual on cd.
If I bought War in the Pacific today, it would just be a Digital file if I asked for nothing else. I would get to burn it to cd, and there would of course be no box or manual.

Matrix Games is moving towards more and more, just offering the game as a Digital download, and if you absolutely need a cd, it can be had for 10 dollars additional to the cost of the download (and shipped of course).

I am not an official, I am merely saying what I have been told ;0

From what I've gleaned from these boards, basically getting the CD ROM product will give you the game in a DVD style case. Ordering it on its own is intended for those without high-speed net connections (or those who have used up their available bandwidth). Ordering with the digital download just means you can download the game and get playing whilst waiting for the box. Saves having to burn yourself a backup.

The terms are due to change and there should be help links up there shortly as well to explain these options. They were supposed to be there already but well, DR being DR...

Here's the new text:

1) Digital Download
2) Packaged Product (currently called "PC CD-ROM")
3) Digital Download & Packaged Product (currently called "Digital & CD-ROM"

What is a Digital Download?

Our Digital Download service sends you a download link to the master game file once your order is complete. You can use this link to download the game directly to your computer over the internet and start playing right away. The download is available to you for thirty days after your order. No shipping is involved and the game is immediately available for you once the order is complete.

What is the Packaged Product?

If all you want is a boxed copy of the game without any digital download, select this choice. If you select "Packaged Product" you will be billed to have the game shipped to you. Our Packaged Product provides you with a DVD box with a CD and your serial number.

The Best of Both Worlds Digital Downloads and Packaged Product!

When you select this option you can use our digital download option to get the game right away and start playing. Then have a boxed copy of the game shipped to you as a backup for permanent storage. With a backup, you'll be prepared for whatever comes your way-whether it's a system crash, a computer virus damaging your files or the software simply no longer functioning as it should. You will be billed to have the game shipped in a DVD box with a CD and your serial number.

I have ordered the the game online ( Digital & CD ROM, because you never know ) and I am hoping to get my serial no's to download the game as soon as my order has cleared ( hopefully in the next couple of days) [>:]

Just thought I'd update this thread with the horrible experince I've had with trying to purchase War in the Pacific.

How true the above statement from Hexed gamer was to become.

I ordered online but in so doing I selected Global Collect Transfer, when I should have selected Giro. No problems I thought, it might cost an extra few pounds, what the hell, Matrix games are certainly the best I've ever come across.... and a Gary Grigsby to boot.

So I complete my order. The price has risen from 45.99 sterling to 71.97 sterling with shipping, tax, paying off Govt cronies etc. Now I'm not too happy about this.......but its a Matrix game[&o], and a Gary Grisby game[&o] to boot, so I'm willing to go that extra mile for it. Now I go to the bank to arrange a wire transfer and authorise payment.

Imagine my ASTONISHMENT ( and fury ) when the clerk told me that to arrange payment the bank would charge me ANOTHER twenty pounds sterling to send the money[:@][:@]


So now the price stands at over NINETY pounds sterling. I absolutely refuse to be ripped off like this. So I go back to try and cancel the order, so that I can try the Giro method of payment and see if that is any cheaper.....but its an impossibility. The responses from digital rivers ( the handling middlemen for Matrix I suppose ) is from an automated email centre so I cannot get hold of anyone to do ANYTHING.

Basically Matrix have lost a sale to one of their very grateful fans, who was always singing their praises. This 'new' way of selling their product reeks of a rip off. At the very least it shows complete disdain to their fans, at most it shows absolute contempt.

I am very unhappy with the whole way its been handled[:@], and I STILL cannot cancel that order......AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!....... bring back shop assistants.

the fee your bank charges is certainly a rip off. IIRC my bank charges 6-8 EUR for an international money order (which I think is allready too much, but hey we all donīt know whatīs involved there too). But that fee is nothing we have controll over. As much as we donīt have controll of your countries taxes.

Just as a side note, as a customer itīs of course also your resposibility to choose the payment method you like. I can see who one can select a payment method and then think "Doooh! I ment the other thing", happened to me allready too.

First off.

I once got a 17 dollar bank cheque for a game I sold to a swede.
My bank told me it would cost me 25 bucks just to cash it.

Well I deal with RBC, and the cheque was actually a Scotia Bank cheque so I figure worth the walk to the other bank.
I get there, and the lady says to me "what, you bank won't just cash a lousy 17 dollar cheque for a long time client?".
So I agree with her advice to see my branch manager. Which I do.

I see the manager, and I explain to her, its a 17 dollar bloomin cheque, and as a long time client of many years, I am not impressed with being told I need to pay 25 bucks to get 17 (which you ALL know is basic math for stupid).
And fortunately she agrees and she cashes it for free.

My bank has done other things like that for me though.

If your bank is not willing to do those small things for you, then you might want to make a noise before letting them know you are taking your business elsewhere, along with anyone else you can convince to do same.

Now on the subject of War in the Pacific Nordic.
None of your hell would have happened if you had spent a bit of time asking a US citizen to buy the game, burn to cd, and mail the cd to you as private mail.
You would be out the cost of the game as price to a US resident, cost of a blank cd, cost of a cd sent in personal mail, and expense to electronically transfer funds.

Last night a friend sent me 23 bucks by depositing it directly into my account. It was done online, and cost him nothing. Granted we are both Canadians. But it illustrates how there are many ways to do many things.
And never once, did Matrix Games really need to jump through any hoops.

And if your friend is a good friend, like my girrlfriend in Texas, you don't even have to pay in advance eh. She orders and ships me games off her credit card airmail her cost, then tells me what the total was.
She is also equipped with broadband and a good burner.
I usually send her a money order to cover her expense.
And I don't mind saying, I have yet to ever pay much for anything through her as a result.

Now you might claim, that getting a digital download through someone else, means they end up getting access to the file for free. And that might sound like a bad thing from Matrix Games point of view. Sorry Matrix Games, there are limits to the crying I will indulge though.
In my case, I picked a woman that not only isn't into wargames enough to want it. But is likely as pure as the driven snow hehe. I am not wasting any sleep worrying she might pirate any download hehe.

So Nordic, when are you planning to look into gaining a nice US girlfriend to expidite future electronic purchases?
VAT what VAT? that's something that bothers people without imagination isn't it?

I would like to add how helpful Marc Schwanebeck has been in helping me sort out my problem.

I have since taken my sanity in my own hands and ordered the product by phone. The woman at the other end was extremely helpful and my order went through without a hitch, and was ALOT cheaper. I recommend this method of aquiring WitP to anyone who wishes to order this product in the UK. I am just waiting for the game to download[>:]

At last and can see if I can follow up my strategy devised in UV, but now in the whole theatre of the Pacific, and am looking forward immensely to a long protracted PBEM game with some poor unfortunate who is foolish enough to challenge the Imperial Navy [;)]
