Gallo Rojo -> Preemptive moved/closed threads? (10/3/2004 6:41:26 PM)

I have noticed that lately some threads have been either moved to other forums, or closed (or moved and closed). The last one was Alby’s thread about the new release of “El Alamo” on DVD.

I would like to know which the new policy about posting out-topic threads in this forum is.

We have discussed movies, history, and some times even political maters here some times before, and usually the discussion was in good terms – particularly when the political topics concern history rather than current events.

I can agree that some of the threads that have been moved were definitely out-of topic and that one of them had gone “weird”. But I don’t see how we can follow from that that any out of topic (and potentially political) threads have to be moved or closed just because they “could get bizarre.” I can also agree that threads that discuss current political events are likely to inflame people (especially given the present world situation), and that they’re not supposed to be discussed here, but I don’t think that talking about historical matters like “El Alamo” (or more precisely, the aesthetic representation in a movie of that historical event) will have to lead to a odd discussion with people insulting each other or something like that. And I definitely don’t see the point of moving a thread for its potential “creepy” development before anything has happened.

Now, I guess that something bizarre have happened in the Art of Wargaming forum (since it was removed from Matrix forums), and that that have probably turn the moderators to be “extra careful” about the threads posted, but given the long time I have been reading this forum (the SPWaW&MC forum I mean) it’s clear to me that the people who post here is very different form the ones that posted in the AoW (no offence but there was to many people there that should be under medication [;)]); so I guess that we can still have discussions about movies, history and political-history as we had in the past without being to insult each others.

Goblin -> RE: Preemptive moved/closed threads? (10/3/2004 7:38:40 PM)

From what I have observed, the forums are not to be the way that we became used to a little over a year ago. Now they seem to have to be strictly on-topic, and (I hope this doesn't get the thread locked) appear to have to not disagree with Matrix. I have seen several locked because people posted on threads, and expressed an opinion that was not in agreement with whatever a Matrix staff member posted. They were locked. Again, this is my observation. Gallo has a point though, we have done hundreds of off topic threads before (look at The Hall of Fame).

Alby -> RE: Preemptive moved/closed threads? (10/3/2004 8:45:42 PM)

Yes my thread about The Alamo has been moved
ok I can see that..it is not about SPWAW
and there were no USMC troops there.
but yet threads about dogs remain??
Also some other threads about nothing inparticular, "VRoom Vroom" is another.
just idle banter. (Sorry Gob[:(])
Nothing against Jess, or Goblin, they are top notch individuals,
These are just a couple of the threads I happen to notice, like mine, that has nothing to do with SPWAW

lets play tit for tat here!!! [:@]

KG Erwin -> RE: Preemptive moved/closed threads? (10/3/2004 9:45:53 PM)

The policy on moving off-topic threads is left to the moderators' discretion--closing them is another matter entirely--that is up to adminstrators.

Alby, you oughta know I'm not picking on anyone--but a movie discussion does better fit in the "General Discussion" area, which I do not moderate.

As for Jess, well, us M4 Lovers gotta stick together, so I will cut him some slack, on occasion. Besides, who doesn't love puppies, and my buddy Jess is definitely a sick puppy. [;)]

Gallo Rojo -> RE: Preemptive moved/closed threads? (10/3/2004 10:41:30 PM)

Ok… so Alby’s thread doesn’t belong here… but Alby does belong here! He may want to post something just to their friends here. You know that there’re people that almost never go to the General Discussion Forum (me for example).

If the decision of moving threads is leave to moderators, I would like to know which your policy is. I saw a lot of off-topic post a lot of times (you posted one recently). My posts here are almost exclusively about the game, but sometimes I post things a little bit off-topic, and if one of those threads is moved or locked I think I’ll feel bad about it – I mean, if it’s a thread that isn’t hurting anyone. So I would like if you have a general rule or something.

I’m not trying to be nasty here. I’m just wondering. If something bizarre happened in the AoW and then the moderators are “extreme cautious” about potentially conflictive threads I can understand that. But then I would like to know the rules. [:)]

And you know that nobody gets really nasty about a movie here… things about we really bitch about are things like how much Fire Control an M-10 should have. [:D]

Example of non conflictive posts:
Member # 1: I think that “El Alamo” is the most stupid movie ever filmed and that the Americans stole Texas from Mexico
Member # 2: yeah… so how cares about that any way? [>:]

Example of conflictive posts:
Member # 1: I think that the M4 was the worst tank ever built!
Member # 2: You %#*& Kats-Lover!! ! You crossed the line this time!! [:@]

Whatever dude, this wasnt really that big a deal, and still isnt really But now I have to call you on your reply.
you basicaaly stated this.....

discussions about movies go in General Discussion, but topics by my buddys, no matter what they are about can stay here.

I, like Gallo, never go to general discussion, and have been posting here in this forum for over 4 years.
so I guess I assumed I could post something here that wasnt about SPWAW, but may interest some people
Topic closed Ive said my piece.
REMEMBER THE ALAMO!!

Personally I think some off topic covnversation wouldnt hurt the forum.
It may even bring some spark to the place.
I must admit the Matrix games forums have lost a little of their shine, a little more light conversation on the forum really isnt going to hurt anybody surely.

I agree with Muzrub.

Here's off topic for you...

I got married last month. I eloped to Alaska of all places.

It was great fun. I even helped a bow hunter carve up a moose the day before I got married. Only in Alaska! [8D]

For those who subscribe to Showtime, a feature-length documentary on the history and the recording of "Smile" will be shown at 9 pm EST.

If you don't have Showtime, go here: http://www.brianwilson.com/

historyis -> RE: Preemptive moved/closed threads? (10/15/2004 8:00:24 AM)

That bands I listen to [&o] the Beach Boys... and Smile has always been one of those lost classic albums... so I am jealous that you are hearing it and as of yet, I have not.
