DJAndrews -> Sub Refeuling at Sea (10/4/2004 12:36:48 AM)

I'm not sure whether I missed a rule change or what, but in UV you could refuel subs at sea using other vessls (subs, transports, etc)as a "milch cow". In my current game my subs are unable to refuel at sea, even from a replenishment TF.

Did I miss something?

CobraAus -> RE: Sub Refeuling at Sea (10/4/2004 2:46:57 AM)

I have no problem in refueling subs at sea in WITP using replenish or AK's
when operating far from base I send an AO for them to refuel from keeping it out air range of course.

Thanx, I guess I'll repeat this over in the bug section then. I've got three subs sitting in a mid ocean hex and they won't refuel. What's even odder is that I can refuel a PG that's in the same TF as the oiler, just not the subs.

Pier5 -> RE: Sub Refeuling at Sea (10/4/2004 3:36:11 PM)

I have been able to refuel subs with no problem. What I find really strange is that AO's run out of fuel with 20,000 (barrels?) of fuel in cargo tanks. They won't refuel themselves. I haven't tried putting each AO in a separate task force. Maybe they can refuel from another AO.

Yep, oilers running out of fuel while full, seen it been there bought the t-shirt

It's kinda like pulling into a gas station, parking at the pump, getting out, and discovering that the fuel door is on the opposite side of the car.

My subs refuse to refuel from AOs[:@]
Not sure how to get around this.[:@]

Not done operationally anyway. You are not sending out unescorted AOs to keep your subs on station year round are you?[8D][:-] LOL This game could use some more operational restrictions for units so the game resembles a sim abit more. Poor electronic sailors. No beer, muff, fresh fruit, sun, anything for the duration! If they manage to survive the insane missions the high command thows at them![:D]

Halsey -> RE: Sub Refeuling at Sea (10/5/2004 10:07:48 PM)

No way would I send a Repl TF out to refuel subs. That's what forward bases are for. Top off going on station and refuel for the trip home.[8D]

If you run out of fuel, put another sub in the hex. They will share their fuel won't they?

Wilhammer -> RE: Sub Refeuling at Sea (10/5/2004 10:10:43 PM)

Yeah, I do the nuclear sub force thing - AOs with AVDs or CS task forces. The IJN CS carry a lot of fuel, so I make a transport TF of them, all AC on ASW, and some low life DDs and PGs along with them, an ASW TF taging along, and a couple of AOs in the rear.

The AOs keep the CS/AVD TF's fueled, and the CS/AVDs keep the subs fueled.

Works like a charm...

Actually, I have a forward base, size 1, with an AO unit in it. The AO is fully loaded with fuel (House rule, no refueling from port <size 3 without an AO or TK in it) I want the subs that do not need torps to refuel in that base, and I haven't gotten around to sending an AS to it yet.

I am obviously not sending unescorted AOs to refuel subs in the middle of the China sea[X(]

To my PBEM opponent: The AO is TOTALLY defenseless, there are no mines BBs PT boats or aircraft in the base[8|]

Who screwed the pooch to get assigned to that AO![:D]

madflava13 -> RE: Sub Refeuling at Sea (10/6/2004 5:53:50 AM)

Subs shouldn't be able to refuel at sea. If they do, it's "gamey" - No one ever did it except the Germans, AFAIK, and even they weren't all that successful at it. You can refuel them from the side of a ship anchored or docked in port, but at sea? I don't think so - not a chance in hell you could manage it. Ever been on a WW2 era US Sub? You'd have men overboard every 30 seconds trying to handle the gear on deck, and thats still assuming the gear would fit and work properly - something I highly doubt.

Platoonist -> RE: Sub Refeuling at Sea (10/6/2004 6:11:58 AM)

Hey! That's what the USN needs. The American equivalent of the German Type 14 Milchkuh. Even the lousy Japanese ASW couldn't miss a target that fat. [:D]

sadja -> RE: Sub Refeuling at Sea (10/6/2004 6:16:32 AM)

refueling at sea on subs is pretty easy, its the transfer of food, torps, and just staying out that long. 60 days in that little not very seaworthy(ie they bounce around a lot. But the short range RO subs can use this refueling. The big I boats have long enough range and time on station.
