Cav Trooper -> Japanese Olympic Swimming Team circa 1943 (10/9/2004 9:48:21 PM)

Now I definately can not wait for the new patch to come out. I've read in the forums where units would pursue retreating units all the way to moscow....Read where units would retreat through other units to conduct partisan warfare in the enemy's rear area's. And all the discussions about land combat, movement and other nice (relatively speaking) oddities of the Land Combat engine. However, until now I 've never had a case of that happen to me....again up until now.

Playing the AI on the Hard Setting, Campaign game late 43, computer AI set to Japan. Here's the combat report for the combat:

Ground combat at Finschafen
Allied Deliberate attack
Attacking force 19755 troops, 191 guns, 0 vehicles
Defending force 5246 troops, 10 guns, 0 vehicles
Allied assault odds: 25 to 1 (fort level 6)
Allied forces CAPTURE Finschafen base !!!
Japanese ground losses:
110 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Allied ground losses:
29 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Defeated Japanese Units Retreating! (in game report says they are retreating towards Madang);

Now let's look at the route they are taking:

Okay Item number one is the result from above.
Item numbered 2 is from a previous combat.

Now, when I've checked the OOB, under the TOE, did I miss the rubber raft equipment Issue or the Canoe issue..

IF the rubber raft is standard issue how do I target it for attack???? ASW or Naval (and what altitude)...

Not looking for a fix, except the patch...Was just wondering if this is a bug, or something that might need to be double checked in the new and upcoming patch. How does the retreat routine check for possible retreat locations, or better yet, is there an internal check for the type of terrain it is retreating to???

String -> RE: Japanese Olympic Swimming Team circa 1943 (10/9/2004 9:51:17 PM)

actually if you look at that hex carefully you'll notice that it has land in it..

pasternakski -> RE: Japanese Olympic Swimming Team circa 1943 (10/9/2004 10:39:11 PM)

What String said. This hex is an allowable retreat hex, but why wasn't this unit forced to take the most directly available retreat route to Madang, starting with the hex NW of Finschhafen?

I also hope that this bizarre retreat behavior is corrected in the patch. The ZOC rules may be an improvement, but we may still find ourselves chasing defeated remnants all over the jungle (for weeks at a time) in order to eradicate them.

I think that more units should just disintegrate when attacked at high odds rather than always being able to retreat just because a hex is available. Think about it. Say that you have hit an enemy base with a couple of highly combat-capable divisions and all that's there is a base force. You get odds of something like 400-1. Why should these guys be able to run away as a cohesive unit of any kind? I suggest that an "overrun" feature be created to address this kind of combat (but let's not do it now, because 1.3 is already painfully tardy).

This also points up why this game system is not suitable for simulating combat in WWII theaters that were primarily land-combat oriented. Can you imagine what a confused mush the WitP land combat system as currently constructed would make of the Russian front? How would this system ever handle blitzkrieg?

It's fine within the context that led to its creation. I think that the Mediterranean theater can be done with the UV/WitP system, but that's probably about all it can aspire to. The war in the Atlantic would require a brand new treatment of submarine/ASW warfare, and I doubt that this system is flexible enough to be useful.

Okay, I see that little sprig of land, but still have to question why it retreated there, and still the system said it was heading to Madang. Oh well, atleast now I'll get some more combat training for my units chasing that little twerp down, or better yet I'll slow stew 'em by bombing and starving them both out for about a month, then I'll send in the girlscouts to smack em about a bit...

Anyway, from what I've seen with Battles in Normandy, Highway to the Reich, and Korsun pocket..if we could get a land combat system simular to this, combined with the naval / aircombat system in WITP then I could believe we'd have the Best combination of both worlds for a long time to come. I don't own any of the games mentioned above, just have done alot of reading on forumns plus AAR's on em to have a basic understanding of the system.

If I'm in error on how that would intergrate into a WITP or ETO theater please correct me....

Anyway, I hope that the new patch will correct this unhistorical, unrealistic avenue of retreat...

Scene I Camp of Japanese refuges.

Japanese 2nd Lt "OK the compass says this direction is north. There should be a trail here not an ocean."

Japanese Pvt " Sir thats not a compass. It's a tiny sundial"

Japanese 2nd Lt " Crap no wonder I got lost in the dark"

Scene II Camp of victories Allied unit

Allied 2nd Lt "Where did those freaking Japanese go to?"

Allied Sgt "I don't know sir they are not on the trail to Mandang as reported"

Allied 2nd Lt "Man those guys are uncanny in their jungle skills"

Admiral DadMan -> RE: Japanese Olympic Swimming Team circa 1943 (10/10/2004 5:42:48 AM)

I think that instead of looking at a compass to decide which way to go, they played a modified version of "spin the bottle".

From the screenshot, you've got 'em surrounded, Cochise. Send in some braves, and you can kill 'em to the last man. Of course, it'll take weeks for your troops to get there...

Ah, okay, I've had some more strange retreats, Japs out of Akyab supposedly retreated towards Rangoon, however they moved one hex to the East...but I did get one interesting piece of news about the wicked confusing retreats. I'll turn you over to the South East Asia theater for the following After Action Report:

British Sgt Major: "Ah, excuse me sir, but we've captured some Japanese equipment and supplies. 150 Cases of Sake, 30 Tons of Rice, 6 Sumuri Swords, and a compass plus a map off of the dead Japanese Commander, sir.

British Commander: Very Well Sgt Major, the Sake distribute amoung the lower ranks for a job well done. Distribute the Rice amoung the civilian poplulation, they looked a wee bit ragged this morning. Distribute the swords amoung the Command Staff so that they may embelish their actions amoung the Press. And send that compass up to G2, maybe they can figure out the Japanese protocol for their retreats...

British Sgt. Maj: Yes sir..consider it done sir...

AT G2 sometime later that week:

Intel Sgt.: Excuse me Col.. but we think we've finally figured out why the Japanese seem to retreat away from their parent commands sir..

G2 Col.: And that would be???

Intel Sgt.: Ah, yes sir, the maps are drawn about 90 degrees out of true and magnetic north sir, compared to ours. But once we looked deeper we found out how they fool the smarter ones.

G2 Col: They've smart commanders????

Intel Sgt: Not really sir, but when we took the compass apart we found a small magnent attached to the inside that cause the compass to always swing 90's away from Magnetic North, and factor in the Sake, Map, and bad reading glasses they use, well they just simply go south sir...
