I saw them up and down the Mediterranean coast. Not Pacific related, but certainly left over from WWII. What are they called, and what was their purpose?

Thanks!

(They look smaller than they actually are)

Edit: Resized for the slow among us.

Trying saving the image to your PC, then uploading it to the Matrix post. It looks like that site probably doesn't allow remote linking.

Ok, I did what you asked, hopefully it will show up now.

Thanks!

Concrete tetrahedrons, but those look far too new to be left over from the war. I'd say they were a modern anti-erosion countermeasure.

Nikademus -> RE: Can you guys tell me what these are? (10/12/2004 7:44:31 PM)

They are concrete structures that resemble Jumping Jacks. The Lithuanian coast piles a bunch along the shores of one of their Baltic sea access points. I think they are a sort of breakwater

They defend against the waves, not anything military.

I gotta get me some of 'dem for my front yard! Used for breakwaters or no, it would definately make the trick-or-treaters think twice about approaching!

These things can be seen at beaches all over of Europe. They are items made of concrete intended to stop erosion of beaches by surfs and waves. Unfortunately they don't work well as can be seen by the fast erosion of the Sylt island in the extreme north of Germany (North Sea).

Concrete Caltrops....to puncture waves.

In America, we just use stacks of empty beercans and used condoms to prevent beach erosion! :)

eMonticello -> RE: Can you guys tell me what these are? (10/13/2004 1:54:59 AM)

We also use concrete ships...

As I recall, there was the remains of a concrete ship (circa WW2) out in Charleston Harbor. But that was when I was a kid (about 25 years ago). Might not still be there.

We have similar stuff like that on Lake Erie in Ohio. The break walls and such are made to protect harbors and beaches. Some are even sunk into the sand to prevent it from running out to the lake but still be able to use the beach.

They use the same for the harbor mouth at Kahului, Maui

I have never seen them on Sylt, they look ugly and belive me, it would start a war here if you try to use these items on our beautiful Sylt [;)]

besides, the sand which drops off at Sylt can be found some years later at Amrun ;)
