ratster -> Transferring or relieving commanders ? (2/16/2002 11:25:00 PM)

Every ship has a commander, I would also assume there are TF commands, base commands, commanders of ground units etc. Can we assign/relieve unit/ship commanders at will, or are there restrictions? Also, what are some of the statistics associated with commanders?

I have not spent a lot of time on this myself but from what I have read on the BetaTesting board the commanders can not be re-assigned. Apparently TF commander are assigned at the time the TF is created. Some players have complained they have created and disbanded a TF many times to get a good commander. I myself take the hand that is dealt me. One of the great things about the Matrix and 2by3games-development team is that they have asked us to post suggested improvements that they will take into consideration for this game and the follow-on games. Keep in mind that UV is very close to completion and the likelihood of any major changes are slim. The testes have asked for the ability to assign commander and Matrix has responded very positively to it.

Commanders are rated for Leadership and Inspiration. I am sorry that I can not (because I can't find it just yet) give you any more information on how these affect missions. Rick

Thanks for the info Rick! I would probably play with whatever was assigned by default also(even if there was, or will be, an option to change commanders), but at the same time I can understand the desire for *micro-managing* this aspect. Seems like it would be an almost obligatory option for WITP(given the grand strategic level of command), if not UV.

One change that happened in real life was Fletcher was replaced by Halsey after battle of eastern solomons.

Hello...

Each land based unit, air group and ship comes with an experience rating and a commander. In Uncommon Valor, these may not exchanged. That may change in War in the Pacific.

Each task force has an ad hoc commander. These are assigned by the computer, when the task force is formed. The player may exchange the task force commander any time the task force is docked at a friendly base, if an officer of appropriate rank is available from the officer pool, by clicking on the name of the officer in the task force orders menu.

All officers in the game are rated for inspiration, overall competence, naval command, air command, army command, aggressiveness and administrative skills. These may change during the course of the game, according to the fortunes of war. The only two which appear as numerical values are inspiration and over all competence. These compose the reputation of the officer. When choosing a task force commander, each officer has a short written evaluation of his competence and aggressiveness and the type task force or task forces for which he would be best suited.

Hope this helps...

Michael Wood

Jason629 -> Thanks (3/27/2002 1:46:26 AM)

Thanks for the detailed reply. I see that one of the screenshots specifies the commander as "Staff Officer" with no numbers attached. http://www.matrixgames.com/games/uncommonvalor/images/uv02.jpg

Is this common?

Hello...

The staff officer designation is an old one and no longer used. It was stub and bullet proofing code we added, until we could flesh out the ship and task force officer assignment routines. You may still see the designation on a platoon of troops that has been separated from the regiment or some other condition, where no appropriate officer can be found or devised. In other words, if no officer can be found in the data base for the unit or created by the officer assignment routines, it appears. At this point, it probably means a non-commissioned officer or warrant officer is running the show.

In the case of a task force, if no admiral is available or the task force is too small or unimportant to rate one, the skipper of the flag ship becomes the task force commander. This might be a captain, commander or lieutenant commander.

In the case of a platoon of commando type forces loaded onto a submarine for raiding enemy locations, the ground force is frequently assigned a captain or major, even though the table of organization might only include a lieutenant, which helps out.

Bye...

What this means is that this option will most likly show up in WITP but not UV.

I think Snigbert meant to inquire out about the set of sentient testicles that is apparently helping to beta test the game.
