What does it mean when it states a city has 240 FIRES?

Nikademus -> RE: Fires (10/26/2004 8:47:22 PM)

240 fire levels. works the same as with ships. Higher the #, more intense the blaze(s) the longer it takes to reduce them to zero which translates into more eventual damage.

RUPD3658 -> RE: Fires (10/26/2004 8:53:40 PM)

Fire level is divided by 10 each turn so the 240 fire level will be 24 next turn. Both are small fires. Firestorms are in the 5000-8000 range.

WiTP_Dude -> RE: Fires (10/26/2004 9:05:15 PM)

Do these fires get started by accident? All I did is hit a couple of manpower units.

Nikademus -> RE: Fires (10/26/2004 9:09:04 PM)

Fires will usually be the easiest/biggest result of your city attacks. Hitting industrial targets (including manpower) is tougher.

WiTP_Dude -> RE: Fires (10/26/2004 9:25:59 PM)

I don't recall ever seeing fires before. Maybe I didn't look that closely though.

RUPD3658 -> RE: Fires (10/26/2004 9:50:09 PM)

I have only started fires after manpower attacks. The bombing only damages 1-2 manpower but the fires take out almost everything else in the city.

Mr.Frag -> RE: Fires (10/26/2004 11:46:43 PM)

City Attacks against Manpower Resources are a special type of attack.

When used, the aircraft bomb the place with the intent of creating a firestorm.

This is the FIRES: #### that you will see in a mouseover of the location.

It burns over multiple turns, lessening as time passes.

Each turn that the fire is burning, all Production type facilities have a chance of being Damaged and/or DESTROYED.

Apart from Atomic Bombs, this is the only method of permanently destroying facilities.

Destroyed facilities count double towards score. This is how the Allies win the game against Japan without using their nukes.

Consider it the gift that keeps on giving! [;)]

Captain Cruft -> RE: Fires (10/27/2004 1:48:07 PM)

This is actually one case where the manual tells all:

FIRES can only be started by City Attack -> Manpower
The FIRES level is divided in 10 every 12 hour pulse i.e. half a turn.

It is nice to see that some of you still do read manuals.

Skyros -> RE: Fires (10/27/2004 7:23:54 PM)

I guess some people like to be slapped[X(]

Hey, I did read the manual but that was almost four months ago now. Hard to remember the especially arcane material that never actually comes up in a game. [>:]

Wait until you get 200,000 in Tokyo ... then you are cooking [;)]

The sound of one hand slapping?

Yeah, that will be a little toasty. [sm=00000612.gif]

Tankerace -> RE: Fires (10/28/2004 6:36:26 AM)

Marshmellows anyone?

Onime No Kyo -> RE: Fires (10/28/2004 8:47:44 AM)

Is there a max fire level? Is there a level at which every structure in a 5 mile radius spontaneously turns into a small pile of ashes? What exactly do you need to hit the place with to cause 200K fire, or is it cumulative?

Tankerace -> RE: Fires (10/28/2004 8:54:31 AM)

I'd say an A bomb would do the trick.....

Seriously though, based on Tokyo in real life, I'd say 2 or 3 consecutive days of about 300 B-29s would do the job.

Onime No Kyo -> RE: Fires (10/28/2004 8:56:30 AM)

I havent gotten out of 1942 yet. That kind of firepower seems mythical to me.

Tankerace -> RE: Fires (10/28/2004 8:59:49 AM)

I know what you mean. In my game, 50 B-17s is just a myth. 300 B-29s..... that's hard to imagine.

Onime No Kyo -> RE: Fires (10/28/2004 9:01:56 AM)

Heck, if I had 300 B-29s I could CARPET BOMB KB!!! [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

Tankerace -> RE: Fires (10/28/2004 9:07:00 AM)

*Thinks a pleasent thought*

Lets see, 1 B-29 carries 40 500lb GP bombs (according to the database), times 300, that is 1,200 GP bombs. And if 4 would knock out a carrier..... mwahahaha, hahahaha, hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha....Hahah, mwahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

LOL....can you say "small, inconspicuous bits of debris"?

carlos -> RE: Fires (10/28/2004 1:01:47 PM)

40 * 300 = 12000

sometimes, a single zero can make a difference :-)

greetings
carlos

well the number of bombs doesn't matter.

IIRC a level bomber can only hit a ship with just one bomb.. no matter how much it carries..

steveh11Matrix -> RE: Fires (10/28/2004 1:20:04 PM)

Well, yes, I read that too. But it's intuitive that a longer/denser 'stick' improves the chance of getting that hit...

I'd hope they were packing 1000lB GP though.

Steve.

I did just this in the 45 campaign. I had over 200 B-29s from Tinian intercept 2 Jap CVEs and escorts. They hit each of the CVEs over 50 times and creamed the escorts. And all this was from 20,000ft. I can only inagine if I had them Skip Bomb from 100ft.

GOOD GOD, 'YALL!!!!!!!!!!! Tell me youre joking. 50 times each?! You know, I was just kidding about that. Now here comes RUPD to tell me I'm not. Did you get a new column in the reports for "Ships Obliterated off the face of God's green Earth"? [&o][X(]

RUPD3658 -> RE: Fires (10/29/2004 4:01:23 AM)

The best part was that they went unescorted through the CAP. I was using them for City attacks but got a sighting report that there were carriers 2-3 hexes away so I decided to put the B-29s on naval attack.

I guess when you drop that many bombs you don't need each one to be too accurate.

I am guessing that the 50+ hits may be FOW unless the entire bomb load of one B-29 hit each CVE. Or maybe they went after the lifeboats too.....
