fbastos -> Anyone play SPWAW or SPWW2? (10/28/2004 4:58:49 AM)

I know, it's the wrong forum... but I'm very bored until the patch comes out, and I'm taking that time to work (again) on the research for a 100-scenarios campaign for the Soviet wars from 1929 to 1940.

Opinions on those? I always liked SPWAW much more, but development seems to have all but stopped on it. Additionally, SPWW2 has the ability to increase the core size, what I greatly appreciate.

Dr. Frag and Mikuma, feel free to bump the thread if it transgresses.

I've played Steel Panthers, on and off, since it's release. SPWAW 8.3 seems to be a maintenance/OOB upgrade, as well as the end of work on it, but hey, don't let that put you off - it's a wonderful game.

Always been a EF WF fan. Both Talonsoft titles have remained on my system since they came out. Some really great mods and scenarios have kept these two games alive. I tried SPW, but the graphics were a little too primitive for me. For me, if I wanted to build units out of a TO&E base, I would prefer the Combat Mission games for flexibility and nice graphics. Plus it is a game that is very hard to master.

's funny...I bought EF, but discarded it after a while. Graphics have never been important to me, and I preferred the SPWAW gameplay. Never got interested in Combat Mission...we're a varied bunch, aren't we? [:)]

That's a fact! Different strokes for different folks![:D]

I've been a John Tiller fan for a long time. I play a lot of his games. After he left Talonsoft and went to HPS he has really improved on his Battleground series. I like a little eye candy when playing. Staring at a computer monitor for a few hours can give you a headache. Pretty graphics make it a little easier to take.[:D]

Nikademus -> RE: Anyone plays SPWAW or SPWW2? (10/28/2004 4:50:28 PM)

I mainly prefer SP:WAW (when i get a chance to play it at all!!!!) though i do like certain aspects of SP:WW2. Main reason for WAW is the more sophisticated armor/pen model which of course eliminated the armor factors in favor of true slope and armor thickness. The model was further improved with the elimination/reduction of all the mass "special rounds" (APCR slot) that still infect SPWW2 leading to skewed results.

But in WW2's favor....they have more dynamic maps that allow much more room for manuever...a big + for people who like to build large cores. They also offer greater differences in elevation and lastly...i think the infantry model is superior. WAW was based off of the steel panthers III engine IIRC....and to me it never quite eliminated the tendancy for that game to award singular kills at the drop of a hat. I also noticed that the routine overly punishes INF units that fire defensively when attacked. (note the initial unmodified to hit % when first attacking an INF unit in cover terrain, have the defender fire in reply, then when you attack it again, your to hit % has quadrupled on average. Makes routing out INF from even heavy cover terrain fairly easy. INF units in WAW also tend to recover too well on average thus dont retreat much so you tend to get mass destruction and higher casualties more often. In WW2 (and now MBT), INF are on average more durable though some may argue that they too can be "gamed" too easily as they retain their 'retreat'/'routed' status if you pour enough firepower at them during a single turn.

I also think that the WAW OOB's were compromised somewhat in order to satisfy all parties. Almost all countries now have average exp ratings in the "country training" version very similar to everyone elses, resulting in a rather generic feel to the game.

Yada yada.....yet for all that....i still play WAW in the end [;)] That and SP:MBT.....the latest upgrade on that is awesome. the best improvement yet since MBT came out.

Have not been playing SPWAW since a very long time but I have really enjoyed MCDF,LV and WT.
My favorite one is defenitively LV that I suggest to everybody interesting in this game.
I should also give a look on SPMBT but there is so many games that I don't have enough time to play.[:(]Is it really an interesting one,I loved SP2 7 or 8 years ago IIRC.
Maybe one day I will need to sleep anymore...[:D]I will get all the time when I will be dead....[:D]

Twotribes -> RE: Anyone plays SPWAW or SPWW2? (10/28/2004 4:59:38 PM)

To many unsuportable changes were made to SP:WAW. It became a game of lets make everyone equal, rather then model the realities of the training and equipment.

fbastos, SPWAW is THE ONLY-and I mean only-game never removed from my HD. Yeah, I still reinstall and play Heroes of Might and Magic, CIV III, and TOAW.

But SPWAW is always on my computer. The game is worth millions.

SPWW2 seems to be better for long campaigns, due to the ability to open the core forces and add more units.

Do you guys know of other tactical simulator that allows for long campaigns too? Does Close Combat allow to edit campaigns?

Also, what the hell happened with Cross of Iron? That would be SPWAW version 9, but it suddendly disappeared!!

medicff -> RE: Anyone plays SPWAW or SPWW2? (10/29/2004 1:35:08 AM)

I like SPWAW model and core size constrants less limited, but the long campaign is frustrating as the computer still aligns its forces to one side and isn't a great challenge, not too mention the problem with upgrades - still cannot upgrade to newer equipment until after the next battle when equipment able to purchase for support forces for the current battle. SPWW2 good but limited core size.

Although I still play SPWAW as time allows. Megacampaigns better laid out.

You guys know if there will be any new development on SPWAW? It's been quite some time that the code itself was improved...

I had an early 50-scenario version of Russian Steel, but since then it just disappeared from everywhere! Did it reach the intended 100-scenario version? Where can I find it?

Yeah, Long Hard Road is awesome. VERY tough, though, as all campaigns from Wild Bill Wilder...

Desertmole -> RE: Anyone plays SPWAW or SPWW2? (10/30/2004 7:45:48 AM)

I have played both, but preferred the SP2:WW2 and SP:MBT. It has been frustrating since I moved from Saudi to Afghanistan, as I bought a new notebook, and it turns out that it won't support the VESA graphics system of the SP2 series.[:(] I really liked playing long campaigns in both games.[:)]

I am afraid I will have to do what I did in Saudi after converting my desktop there to XP. I bought an old Pentium 1 and rigged it to emulate DOS using Win 98. I had all my old SSI games SP, SPII, SPIII, GNB2, GNB3 and GNB5 loaded. I loved GNB5! Bringing the Kaiser's big boys to battle and Stompin' the SPIT out of 'em![sm=00000289.gif]
