Huffy -> little help please (10/29/2004 1:30:25 AM)

Hey everyone, I think this was covered before...but don't remember the outcome. My friend cannot get his SPWAW to play...he does a gen camp....gets his units...deploys...but when he clicks to go to first turn...it boots him out...
any ideas?
Thanks,
Huffy

perhaps some more details are needed
what year
what countries...etc etc....

Try deleteing the steel.prf file right off, and see if it solves the problem.

Huffy, can you get his CPU info as well?SPWAW is a power hog,and the version of Windows may even be relevant..(SPWAW will run on anything, but we might need to know what he's running..)[:D]

Huffy -> RE: little help please (10/29/2004 9:18:37 AM)

yea,...he has a 1.8G,...80G hd,...378 DDR ram,...SB live,...fx5200 128 video card,...We just reloaded his machine with XP pro...and got the latest drivers from the web.
take care,
Huffy

If it isn't the steel.prf, I'd consider going through the sound files...

Before he starts the first turn, see if it works by turning all sounds off in the preferences screen.

Svennemir -> RE: little help please (10/29/2004 10:05:39 PM)

Have you only tried Germany vs Russia, 1944-45, etc?

Try some different OOBs, see if the problem persists. If it does, well... maybe it's a graphical problem but you never know. It's probably not the CPU, since overheating takes time and this error occurs at a very specific time (namely as soon as the battle starts).

KG Erwin -> RE: little help please (10/29/2004 10:51:58 PM)

Huffy, you mentioned SB live--I think there were some issues with SPWaW working correctly with this sound card that go back a long way. As with video cards, sometimes we are forced into rolling back upgraded drivers in order to get older games to work properly. I encountered this problem with the newest Nvidia drivers and Silent Hunter II. The problem was solved by rolling back to an earlier driver.

As time goes by, the driver-compatibility issue with new games vs old ones will become even more pronounced. It is unfortunate, but it is inevitable.

Huffy -> RE: little help please (10/30/2004 1:49:57 AM)

As far as I know...it is the only battles he plays...he likes the Russian front theater. As for the driver issue...yes,..I know ...I am going through that with my sons comp now...newer games like /need the updated ones...and,..as you said...older games don't like the new ones.
Thank you everyone for helping out....I'll get with him and try out these ideas...hope it works...( I think it will...being possitive).
Take care,
Huffy

That's great, Huffy. This is what we are here for, to help out our buddies. [:)] I'm having a few drinks tonight, so I'll toast the Matrix Band of Brothers for taking care of each other. [sm=00000436.gif]

BTW, don't forget to set your clocks back one hour tonight. We're going back to standard time here in the US. An extra hour to party. [sm=party-smiley-012.gif]
