Tophat -> Question for Allied players (11/1/2004 7:38:07 AM)

For scenario 15 players:

Do you breakdown every U.S and Auzzie Div you can get your paws on to Brigade and regiments then disperse them as Island garrisons? Or do you keep a Division intact as an assault formation? Or do you simply use a future reinforcement formation as the "assault" formation? Or do you simply play it by ear?

I keep them intact, I only break them up when I have to send an AP transport in contested waters. then I break a unit up so that it fits on one ship, giving me a better chance not to get spotted.

greetings

carlos

really depends what I have in planning for them. sometimes I split, sometimes I wont.

Hat..I try and use some the Regimental Com. Teams as garrisons when I can...but sometimes you gotta use a 'broken down' division....when I do I try and keep my most experienced units as the assault troops and breakdown the less experienced as garrison troops....so I guess its a play it by ear.

Hi,

Good question. I tried once breaking 24 Div into regiments and after a couple of days, could not rebuild them into the division again as there was no Rebuild button (all 3 regiments were throughout the days at Cairns). I must be missing something[:@]

I'm only into February, but I break them down as needed. I send a regiment to Christmas Is., Johnson, Midway, Suva, and Pago Pago among others. These islands are too important to me and my LOC. Of course, my opponent already took Canton (I believe) island, so all these are much closer to him now. I use RCT's first, but if none are available, then whatever I have available works.

BaitBoy -> RE: Question for Allied players (11/1/2004 3:02:33 PM)

I keep my divisions intact. Through the first half of '42 the Japanese can take any island they want if it has less than a division on it. There is no point in garrisoning an island with too few troops to get the job done.

I tried playing around with splitting some of the Indian divisions up and toggling replacements off for most units. My theory was that since the Indian replacement rate is pretty low, maybe it was better to have a near full strength regiment on the line while the other regiments that make up the division were further to the rear filling out.

I never did get far enough to see what the overall effects were...

I break down divsions just for that they seem to fill out and undisrupt better. I also break them up for transport and occassionally for defense of bases they can retreat from (ie new guinea/australia). But as said anything less than a division early on can be taken at will by the Jap player if wanted unless it is just a probe or expecting little resistance.

I know the Japs can take what they want early on if I have less than a division there, but if there's at least a Regiment/part of a division, it forces him to send more there. And, if that regiment is behind a level 3 or higher fort, it can probably hold out for a while depending on what the japs send at it. That's why I protect a lot of the islands on my LOC from the West coast to Australia with Regiments. The more important the base, the more it gets though and I position forces so I can reinforce most of the bases with just a regiment in a week or less. Not perfect, but I think it helps tie down the Japs and makes him spend more to take these bases. The ones I'm talking about are Christmas Island, Johnston Island, Pago Pago, Suva, etc. The good thing is they are so far from most Jap bases, they require carrier air support. Which allows me to preposition my units for an ambush. And combined with the Japs horrible damage control, makes it more likely he will lose some of these carriers even if they are only damaged.
