Why would it be that hard to take NZ?
If not all allied reinforcements are sent to NZ, then it can be done IMHO.

After the DEI, Malaya and PI falls the Japanese can concentrate on one avenue: Rabaul, Lunga, Luganville, Noumea, NZ. The KB is always there to support if needed. As is much of your LBA.

In the west you can do a feint in Burma. Japan must take a risk and should leave the DEI and the PI with very few forces.

According to my NZ mate, New Zealand is at the same latitude (well, on the opposite hemisphere [:)], but you see my point ) as Spain.

So I guess you can go south of NZ quite a long way before you hit ice.

Raverdave (I think it was) tried a game trying to take NZ, he got messed up in Auckland though. Very close, though. But it seemed high stakes gambling, indeed.

Even if there is still room to the south, NZ in Japan's hands would prevent any supply convoys. Otherwise a few Jap CVLs, DDs and CS ships can attack the convoys any time.

The islands in the South Pacific were much needed for the convoys heading to Oz - repairs, anti-sub patrols, etc. Without the islands a damaged ship is a lost ship. Even if in the game it would be possible to run the convoys down south, in real life it is too risky.

In my game aganist dude. He has tried to take New Zeland and it has cost him a lot. Look at the AAR between WitpDude and Zeta16.
