hithere -> Signal intercept questions (11/8/2004 5:26:04 PM)

I did a few search, never really saw a answer. does anyone know:

1) What determines when you get a "radio trans intercepted at blah blah" as opposed too "unit A is on a transport to attack B" Is it assumed you have a spy or is it percentage based?

2) Does a intercept acually mean that a unit has gotten orders or is it sporatic and might just be ordering more toilet paper?

3) Does the allied or Axis ability improve over the course of the war?

4) Has anyone acually been able to use the Sig Int to any advantage? I saw one person said that they vector sub to radio trans. that would be a advantage if it was a transport convoy, not so much if it was a ASW taskforce. I see no way to determine the difference.

I tried to do some test, but that even led to more frustration. sometimes I even got trans from hexs with no units there.

Feinder -> RE: Signal intercept questions (11/8/2004 5:36:18 PM)

To be perfectly frank, most of it is crap.

I think there are several levels of intel, that can be gained.

Radio transmissions detected at...
(number of) trops are located at...
(named unit) is located at...
(name unit) is planning to attack...

I don't put any stock in radio transmissions. As an Allied player, I've looked at teh Jsigint report, and where it says there are radio transmissions, I don't necessarily have any units there (or anything close, so it's not even a transit hex).

I do review the report ever day, just to see if there anything unusual. But it's really too early in the game to make any differece for my PBEM game. It's only late December, so my most expicit reports are "4th Tank Brigade is planning to attack Rangoon." That just goes in the "Duh!" catagory.

It is mildly useful to keep all of them, and do a search on the base that you're planning to invade, to see what units (or number of men) MIGHT be at your objective. Depending on how old the report is, it might be accurate, or the bad-guys might have left Dodge 3 months ago.

I expect they become more useful for the Allies in about April, when the initial offensives have quieted down, and you really -are- wondering where Japan is going to strike next.

Vs. AI, I don't find them useful, because I haven't had any trouble clobbering the AI. Not trying to brag, but I don't really care where he's planning to attack.

Occasionally you can get slightly useful info - and find a sub or ship not previously spotted at the site of a radio transmission.

Often, the reports are only puzzling - like "Radio transmission reported from Vancouver" - huh? I think that this is my own Allies transmitting (I guess without permission[:'(]) - I never found any subs lurking in the hex.

SIGINT=Military Inteligence=Oxymoron

Good question though, esp. since we allready had broken the Nippon codes prior to the outbreak of the war. I only use them for possible attacks. Otherwise without having a way to compile and formulate all the intel that comes in, it is to me for the most part useless. Maybe you can have your kids become your intel shop, and have them plot all the info on a map etc. Great way to exploit, I mean get your family participation [;)]

hithere -> RE: Signal intercept questions (11/8/2004 6:33:09 PM)

aahhhh....yes....must use all resources [:D]

PeteG662 -> RE: Signal intercept questions (11/8/2004 6:53:40 PM)

Once a week or so you see something that may be of use like a convoy heading to a place with someone embarked which you can ambush.

tanker4145 -> RE: Signal intercept questions (11/8/2004 9:33:54 PM)

Early war when it says xxx unit is loaded on AP heading to location xxxx, can be useful. If it's in the DEI, I use Subs and destroyers to interdict if it's a small base. If it's heading to a big base, then it probably has plenty of escorts, but if it's going to a small base then a DD or two can do wonders against some APs and PGs.

It can also tell you if they are planning to attack somewhere. Like if you see a bunch of units planning to attack Nomeau, then you may have an idea where your enemy wants to attack in a month or two.

Ron Saueracker -> RE: Signal intercept questions (11/8/2004 9:37:47 PM)

Mainly useless gibberish. More ship intel would be useful. Radio transmissions? [>:] LCU stuff a bit.

hithere -> RE: Signal intercept questions (11/8/2004 10:14:56 PM)

i think that one reason alot of people believe it is no good is because it does not seem like people really know how to use it. I find it hard to believe that they would have included it as eye candy. one of my main questions is, does a radio trans only show up when a order is changed? it seems like that is the case, but i can not fig out if unit's and ships generate "random" radio messages. I have played the game with both sides and can match some of the stuff but not others.

Also, say a ship in on the way to invade Port Moresby, why would it generate (and would it always generate for that matter) a "radio trans" intercept instead of a "so-n-so to going to attack PM" message.

jhdeerslayer -> RE: Signal intercept questions (11/8/2004 10:17:44 PM)

Seems more misleading then useful in fact I never use it.

hithere -> RE: Signal intercept questions (11/8/2004 10:22:58 PM)

which ofcourse brings up another point, is it subject to "fog of war" like the other parts of this game.

*** can someone from Matrix or one of the Beta testers comment one this. from what i can tell from past post, i do not think the beta use it very much either. This may need to be answered from someone at 2by3 even. I have to believe that they would not have put it in unless it can serve some kinda purpose, but i have been told i am naive (or however it is spelled)

This I feel is closest to the truth, also as mentioned by Feinder, that it will give you a 'feel' that something is up. I think it is wise just to scan it see if anything unusal crops up or you are getting continual reports about something more 'specific'

Charbroiled -> RE: Signal intercept questions (11/8/2004 10:44:53 PM)

I would like to see some improvements on the sig intel, but it isn't without use as it is now. I have been able to find enemy subs in hexes based on radio transmissions from the middle of the ocean. Also, once I was going to try a back door assault in the Rangoon area, thinking that the japanese might not have troops in the hex I was attacking. I looked at sig intel prior to ending my turn. It just happened to show that the hex I was planning on attacking had 30,000 troops in it. I thought that was timely information.[X(]

I would like the coast watchers "guess" at what kind of ship they are spotting. And some better TF movement info.

I don't put much weight in "XX division is planning for an attack on YY", because the computer opponent seems to "plan for attacking YY", even if they don't have resourses to pull it off.

dtravel -> RE: Signal intercept questions (11/8/2004 10:49:18 PM)

Sounds like most of you should have been serving in DC in May of '42. [:)]

Personally, a lot of the SigInt report is "Don't Care" or "That's Useless" categories. Next most populous is the "Hmmm" stuff that can over time give a feel for the general flow of enemy operations if you track it in detail over time. That just leaves the "Duh!" stuff like 'Kagoshima Fortress is based at Kagoshima.' and 'Hari-Kari SNLF is planning for an attack on Manila' when you've been fighting them there for the last two days. But there are the occasional, rare, reports of units on ships heading for one of your bases or units planning attacks on places that don't currently have enemy units within search range. Even more rarely you can do something about those, be it move in LBA or send a nearby TF. Those are what make looking thru the report worth it. They don't happen all the time, maybe once every several months. (Which seems a reasonable rate to me personally. The US may have broken many of the Japanese codes but we couldn't decode all of it due to the sheer volume. There's stuff we still haven't decoded.)

Now, all that is playing as the Allies. If you're the Japanese, then its toilet paper. [:'(]

tanker4145 -> RE: Signal intercept questions (11/8/2004 11:09:15 PM)

I've found it fairly useful. Nothing great, but I've surprised a few invasions/transport TF's based on SIGNIT. I would like to be able to click on a line in the report and have it highlight the hex so I don't have to search for it.

As for the XX Division is planning for an attack on YY, it's useful against the human because if he sets a unit for a base like Pago Pago, or Nomeau, it may give you a hint. It could also be a deception. But it's something.

If I was high speed like some of the others on these boards, it'd probably be a good idea to make a spreadsheet with the number of troops reported at each base. Update it as you find out more info and with recon flights. Actually, I may have to make one for myself. It'd really help when the tide turns for the Allies to let me know where to go.

I do wish there was more ship intel. The only time I got any SIGNIT on warships was on the KB after they sunk 2 of my carriers. A little late.

Under v1.21, I've gotten a few IJN Sub reports that say, "I-176 is located at ," Where litterally, the coords are are blanked out. Anybody else get this? Haven't gotten an sub locations under v1.3 to see if it's still like this.

In first pbem received a great signit. Divsion?? is planning operations against Midway, this was in late December 41. I Fast transported around a battalion of the 24thXX along with a TR'ed Marine CD unit and the island held. The two Marine CD's messed up some DD's and sank a few Ap's. Also ran in around 10 subs just west of Midway and they got hits on transports, sinking some. Held out for about two weeks and then we quit to restart when the first patch can out.
