Hirohito -> Amphibious landings at Bataan early on (11/14/2004 2:26:09 AM)

From reading several comments, it seems that if the Allies congregate a large number of troops in Bataan it will take a long time to root them out. Has anyone used a strategy against PI of landing at EVERY base that has an approach from the sea right away including Bataan? If you were successful the allies would retreat to clark field and be totally cut off from supplies.

How tough of a nut is Bataan to crack from the sea?

Hirohito

Bataan is pretty nasty. There is a LOT of very heavy coastal artillery in that hex, and if you lose less than 10-20 ships and a few thousand casualties, consider yourself lucky. Also, the peninsula starts off with several Allied combat units in the hex, plus it is a forest hex, I believe.

Personally, I think the best place to defend as the Allies is Manila, anyway. The urban hex gives you excellent defensive positions, and much of your supplies starts in Manila anyway.

Go for it. If you apply maximum effort in the PI with about 5 divisions and 2 brigades, the PI will fall in Feb42 if not sooner. And every Eng, art you can lay your hands on.

No need to try and land everywhere. You would have to land a full brigade or larger otherwise the allied player would just destroy what ever you landed before your main force got there.

Under 1.3, I had an IJN bombardment group hit Bataan, BB, couple of CAs, DDs. Result: some hits on the ships, not too devastating, pounded US forces somewhat good.

Have to overcome 100 mine minefield, Fort level 3, Corregidor Fort with 4x14", 4x12", 2x8", 6x 6", 10x155mm; 2 Arty Regts, 4 USMC Rgt(63 Assault), PA Div (118 assault), 2xTank Bn (49 total Assault), plus the baseforce.

I think it might be done, if some extra Bombardment TFs are diverted with around 3 divsions. Give it 4-5 days bombard, air attack, then invade. Only because of loud whining, CD's effect was lessened for 1.3, so opening up this possible gambit. . .

Oh yeah, kept a constant stream of supply convoys, reinforcements, it ain't gonna fall in a day, but will fall.

I don't really play Japan (yet), but still my thinking is...

"Isn't landing at Bataan, the hard way of doing things?"

You can beat the US forces overland, so why bother fighting the into teeth end of the lion. Isn't it sort of like landing at Singapore. Sure you can, but why bother?

Not trying to be a smart-ass. But it's not necessary to get clobbered in Manilla Bay, so why do it?

To me, only a fool would try it. much better to land at Lingyan and march to Clarke, thereby cutting off any more troops from reaching Bataan.

Manila is a much harder nut to crack IMO if the Allied player makes his stand there.

what i have seen in my games against the AI, is that the AI will pull everything it has into Bataan, leaving you free to take the entire PI with a relatively small force. The AI does NEVER counterattack from bataan. Currently I am in feb 42 and have taken the entire PI with just 2 brigades and am holding clark with them (also some base forces). Now I am using my short range ki 48 II and KI 51's from clark to port attack bataan, getting 8-10 port supply hits a turn. At this rate the 33 !! or so units in Bataan will run out of suplies in about 1 month. After I have let them rot for another 2 months or so i will probably be able to mopp them up with my 2 brigades......

The point is, The AI could EASY break out of bataan and retake the entire PI, but it is to stupid to do this, so there is no real need to storm into a HEAVELY DEFENDED Bataan, just siege them to death, if doing so you lose nothing but some time and the use of manilla harbour...............

Drop one of the airborne SNLFs into Lingayen on turn 1 and 2 and follow with shipborne reinforcements, head to Clark to isolate Bataan. Drop the other one into Lamon Bay as soon as you can and follow with shipborne assault to isolate Manila and it is basically all over with in the PI. Slice the pieces and no retreat into Bataan or Manila.
