This is off topic, but if this help one person it is worthwhile. A lot of people are interested in buying stocks. The market has jumped up since the election. I have one suggestion avoid companies that have really large deferred taxes on their balance sheet. Deferred taxes have nothing to due with the IRS or revenue Canada. When a company uses a different accounting procedures (depreciation etc) than one used by the government it creates profits on its net income statement that are not in the tax report accountants than assign the standard tax rate to this supposed profit resulting in something call deferred taxes. Large deferred tax number indicates profits are over reported.

Bodhi -> Another totally OT thread (11/16/2004 1:36:34 AM)

Don't think this is the place for this, do you?

It's not just deferred taxes. Essentially any "asset" that isn't cash, a receivable or a security of some kind, or real estate, sooner or later will wind up on the company's income statement as a reduction of net income....

Yes, we are shamefully OT. But at least it is practical and not just annoying political BS.

When buying stocks I follow the advice of Will Rogers:

Buy stocks and, when they go up, sell them. If they do not go up, don't buy them.

Buy Low. Sell High

Yes, lets stay on topic of WitP.

Deferred taxes are not always bad. Essentially, it is a timing difference of book to taxable income.

And you have to have things in the balance sheet that eventually go to the profit or loss otherwise what are you making or selling. Got to spend money to make money.

On topic, please.

[:D] Apparently no way to buy Mitsubishi stock in the game that I know of since
Nikkei and Jasdaq came about after Scenario 15 (or any variation) ends. IIRC. [;)] [:D]

DrewMatrix -> RE: Avoid Buying Stocks with company with large deferred taxes (11/17/2004 5:49:41 AM)

Maybe Matrix can set up a separate forum for Investing and Financial Planning.

That would be helpful in getting to that early retirement that would let us spend lots more time playing WITP, so it really isn't off topic.

But it needs its own forum.
