tanker4145 -> Upgrading Bolos without enough B-17C's (11/17/2004 7:42:04 PM)

I'm having trouble upgrading my Bolo's to B-17Cs (and then on to B-17Es). I have only 32 B-17C's in my pool, but I need 48 I think in order to upgrade them and I'm not producing any more B-17Cs from what I can tell. I will soon have enough B-17E's in the pool to upgrade a group. Am I SOL or can you skip one aircraft upgrade and go straight to B-17E's? Oh yeah, it's scenario 16 and it appears I don't get anymore B-17C groups either so I can't upgrade them and use their planes to do the upgrade.

Thanks for the help.

If you have enough Es to upgrade the Bolos, it should skip the Cs.

divide the bolos and upgrade one group at at time (b-18 to b-17c to b-17e) You'll only need 16 c's to upgrade one third at a time.

Also, if you set the group to upgrade and run the turn, the computer will automatically skip the c's and go to e's.

This exactly how you do it. Recycle the C's to each subgroup one at a time.

This is a slight rehash but:

a) you can move Cs into the pool a few at a time by upgrading some smaller B17C group or by dividing a big one

b) The AI can skip one step (go from Bolo's to B-17Es for example, or any other similar two-upgrades-at-once upgrade).

To get the AI to do this you need to put the Bolos on Autoupgrade, then let the turn run. The AI will look for Cs, not see enough, but go straight to Es if there are sufficient Es. At least in 1.21 (I haven't gotten that far under 1.30) you can't do that double upgrade manually.

And obviously only set Autoupgrade one Bolo group at a time, then turn off Autoupgrade once they are Es lest you lose control of your replacement pool.

I feel dumb, I didn't even think of dividing the groups! Wow, I had the easy answer looking me in the face. I've done that for other groups but forgot somehow. I can also do the auto-upgrade and wasn't sure how that works. Thanks a ton guys.

a bit off topic, but to further this along.

Playing full campaign and early Jan 42. the Bolos, wihich if I remember right are a 72 unit group, is still not filled out.

1. Does the unit have to be filled out prior to upgrades ?

2. Can there be damaged units in the group and still upgrade ?

3. If the unit is not filled out or has damaged units can it still besplit ?

I am at work and just thought of this.

No. But when you upgrade it will fill out (see below)

Yes. See Below

Yes.

"Below"
You can (all in one turn):
Fly an airgroup to a port (As the Allies I frequently do this San Diego to SF for example)
Upgrade
Upgrade again if you have the A/C
Then load the whole thing (which is all being repaired due to being upgraded) on a transport.

If you _divide_ the AG before loading you can put it on 3 different AKs, so a lucky Sub Attack by the Bad Guys can't cost you the entire AG.

And remember when you do upgrade it, it will go from the present size to Full Strength. That may make it more expensive to change HQ so if you want to change some West Coast unit to SOPAC, for example, _first_ change to SOPAC (when the unit is 24 A/C or whatever) _then_ upgrade the unit (boosting its size to 72 AC)

Oh, and since the upgrade takes you to full strength you need the full-strength complement of the new model to be allowed to upgrade

Many of the Bolos will change upgrade paths to B-25's as well.[;)]
