Chaplain -> Niggles that are driving me nuts in WitP (11/18/2004 2:35:56 AM)

This is the greatest wargame ever (w/possible exception of HOI2) and I go back 30 years in the hobby. But a couple of niggles:

1) Why is it that when you pull up the screen for switching commanders of a task force/squadron/LCU, they aren't automatically sorted according to capability? Every single time I pull up that menu, I have to resort it. Does anyone think the default order of the roster [whatever that order is - rank? I can't figure it out] is the best idea?

2) Why is it that when I transfer an air unit from one base to another, and I choose the option to 'select on map', the resulting map deletes all LCU's? I mean, I want to send my planes to bases that have someone defending the airstrip, don't you?

3) Why is it that when I am loading units onto transports, and I want to check them, the resulting screen does not tell me which destination that unit is planning for? How come this vital piece of data is omitted from the unit readout? I find that I have to keep memorizing the unit names from a different screen (5th SNLF and 6th IJN Base Force, e.g.) rather than simply checking as I go? I have to back all the way out of the loading screen and go over to another screen to find this integral info.

In all of these cases, the fixes seem extremely simple - just add the field from the database reference to the query. Am I alone in thinking these are some things that ought to be corrected? [8|]

Not only do I agree with you on these especially number 3.

I just reached February 42 in Scenario 15 and wanted to find all the ships that had updates available. The only way I could find was to go to the ships tab and look up each and every ship, write down the name and task force number. All I could think about is wouldn't it be nice if could sort by this information.

The other item on my wish list would be better filtering on industry sites and their stockpiles of resources and oil.

Still a great game though, now where did the Yorkton go after last being seen near Tarawa?[:-]

I could swear that I see this in 1.3... I go to the transport, click on the unit it is carrying and I see the destination planned (along with the other data) I'm not sure I understand the problem?

Right on guys!

Agree with you 100%

Onime No Kyo -> RE: Niggles that are driving me nuts in WitP (11/18/2004 8:05:12 PM)

My problem with loading LCUs is that the AI seems to plan things a mite differenty. When I create a TF, I look at the loading value of a unit when I calculate the number of hulls. I always figure that the troops are first to go onboard and whatever room is left is used for supplies. This is not always the way it happens. Very often I end up with a TF loading up to the gills with supplies but leaving small parts of the unit at base.

One example was me loading the 33rd Inf Div (I think) at SF in the '43 scenario. The TF was all AKs. I forget how much cargo capacity there was but the TF carried only that one div. It ended up loading over 10K of supply by left 30-something support units back at base.

Am I doing something wrong?

I'll keep my ships loading LCU's in a different TF than the ships loading supporting supplies. Doing it this way allows the supply ships to be loading at the same time as the troops (though not sure if this actually speeds things up or not). It also prevents the troops loading into ships reserved for supplies. As long a I make sure I have enough ships for troop loading, I don't seem to leave any remnants. Once both TFs are loaded, I usually will combine them and send them on their way. Any extra supplies loaded onto troop ships to fill extra space are just a bonus that I didn't plan on.

You can also do "Load troops only" for the troop TF to make sure room is available for the LCUs.

Man, I feel your pain.

when I wanna send some Dutch APs to pick up stranded garrisons I have to make a note of where they are, since when I pick Select Destination on Map the Unit icons disappear!

Charbroiled -> RE: Niggles that are driving me nuts in WitP (11/18/2004 10:37:19 PM)

I was struggling with the LCU icon disappearing on "select destination" also, until someone pointed out that if the mouse curser is placed where the LCU icon should be, any land unit info will still show up.

True - I'm aware of this workaround. But why? It shouldn't be necessary. What do we gain by eliminating the icons? Knowing a LITTLE something about database-driven programming, I'm pretty sure the problem could be solved by simply adding a few fields to the query which produces these reports. It's not like we're gaining anything by eliminating the icons.

Just a suggestion ...

I have seen this when I had a unit not at full strength accepting replacements and loading over a few days. I think the taskforce does not calculate for the added assets and you get a reminant. This may not be your case, but worth a look.

Okay people, you have got to stop posting in this thread. Everytime I see the thread title in my unread section a little voice in the back of my head starts chanting it to the tune from the Weebles commercial.

(Weebles wobble but they don't fall down. AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! [sm=00000106.gif])

Desertmole -> RE: Niggles that are driving me nuts in WitP (11/20/2004 9:19:59 AM)

Too late. Another post![:D] I use a rule of thumb for loading LCUs on transports. I look at the capacity of the TF and will load to about 60% of total with troops. This way entire units get loaded. I was getting frustrated with leaving 40-50% 0f a unit at the POE (Port of Embarkation) when trying to max out the troop load. This seems to work quite well.[8D]
