Ok, I have a tough one, though no trickery, it was a WWII era weapon from the Pacific theatre.

Soviet something.

Hortlund -> RE: Name this gun :) (11/18/2004 9:06:57 PM)

Not soviet...that one just looks plain odd. My guess is "some homemade Chinese junk"

Extra barrel on the right side? Sights on the left? It would appear to be more British in origin adapted for a high cyclic rate of fire but the coil around the barrel would make it appear to be more of a Japanese type.......got me!

Cheap rip off of a Thompson 45 auto?

khelvan -> RE: Name this gun :) (11/19/2004 9:03:09 AM)

Close, Tallyman :)

Not Japanese though...

PeteG662 -> RE: Name this gun :) (11/19/2004 3:22:36 PM)

Maybe a modified bren made in another country?

grossmetzger -> RE: Name this gun :) (11/19/2004 4:43:22 PM)

it looks like a strange mix of a thompson (barrel and grip) and a bren (mag). looks like a "self-made" prototype

PeteG662 -> RE: Name this gun :) (11/19/2004 4:47:57 PM)

The pistol frip in back is wrong for an American design. The front grip looks like the Thompson one. I still think it is of Commonwealth design due to the offset sights. The wood buttstock is more on the line of what was used by Soviets and eastern countries versus Europe/America. Still no clue but this is a hybrid of some kind.

Could this be a Dutch gun ?

Maybe some kind of weird Madsen design.

aspqrz02 -> RE: Name this gun :) (11/20/2004 1:30:53 PM)

Easy! Its the New Zealand emergency conversion of the Lee Enfield into a light machinegun (no, I kid you not ... shows how desperate the Kiwis were, even compared to us Aussies!)

Did some quick checking, as I said, it is a Kiwi conversion of the SMLE. The "Charlton", which was designed for home defence and was actually produced in limited numbers in Australia because Kiwiland lacked pretty much anything like Heavy Industry (as we know from WitP!). Made in a Vacuum cleaner factory ... used a Bren magazine, 4000 were ordered but production stopped after only a "few hundred" and the plant was then used to produce Owen guns (SMGs). Those Charltons made were issued for Home Defence, but were only used for a short period. [from "Military Small Arms of the 20th Century" by Hogg and Weeks]

aspqrz has it right. The story of the Charlton is quite interesting. If a little obscure...:)
