paplan -> I just got this game and I'm lost (11/18/2004 8:10:07 AM)

Is there a tutorial? Or do I have to actually read the manual? Any help here?
Many thanks.

I am new too , on my fourth battle after securing a major victory on the third ..what a great game ..

What is that you are confuse ..just post and I am sure there are a lot of mentor that will guide you

The manual is quite simple ..nothing much actually ..just keep playing and you will get into the game ..

Cheers

Browsing the manual should help you understand the mechanics. Is there anything specific you're stuck on?

here is a short one page 'tutorial' to help you figure out the interface

Another good place to figure out 'tactics' is to read the after action reports. You can see turn by turn action and how the player executed his strategy. I especially recommend the one by Marathon. It's a nailbiter as well as will show sound strategy in defending the foes

OK, thanks for the help, I think that I'm learning.

Two more questions.
1) How, exactly, are combat results calculated? Can you give me an example?
2) The little numbers (for instance, +4, 0) that pop up when you order a melee attack. Are these all modifiers combined, or just some of the modifiers?

Thanks..................

Combat is on a 10d for each roll. You get a 30% chance of hitting unmodified. You get 1 roll for each infantry stand, 2 rolls for each cavalry stand and 4 rolls for each elephant/chariot stand. Therefore, you can do a max of 4 hits (i.e., 400 enemy killed) per attack.

These are modifiers that you will get for the attack (i.e., +4) and the modifier the enemy will get when retaliating (i.e., +0).

how could a unit (of course Persian - ai) doing one casualty with -7[&:]

koiosworks -> RE: I just got this game and I'm lost (11/22/2004 4:48:18 PM)

every unit has a chance for a 'lucky' shot and get a hit. the chance is 1/100

the AI is realy lucky, at least 2 'lucky' shot on 65 results, one with -7, the other with -5

assuming 65 shots (and not stands, remember a cav will get 2 shots per stand, an elephant 4 shots etc.) then a binomial distribution reveal a 14% chance of getting at least 2 lucky shots in 65 rolls. Certainly safely within a 90% confidence curve [8D]

sorry but I was not clear.

all to gether I have 65 battles.
on this 65, 19 with a malus between -7 and -1 but only 2 with a malus superior to -2

at -7 with only one stand the Persian AI made 1 casualty
at -5 with 4 stands the Persian AI made 1 casualty

at least it's a lot of lucky for the AI, isn't it?

not 65 battles but 65 combats/engagement in one battle if you prefer

2gaulle -> RE: I just got this game and I'm lost (11/24/2004 5:29:29 AM)

Here some interesting result from one battle

237 macedoniens dice roll with an average chance of 56% give an average casualty of .6

192 Perso/Indian dice roll with an average chance of 35% give an average casualty of .4

not a great difference but the ratio is 107 for the Macedionien but 120 for the AI

more interesting for bonus bellow 1 the result are
macedonien 23% for 34 casualties
ai 22% for 36 casualties

but with bonus up to 1 the result are
macedonien 62% for 61 casualties
AI 41% for 48 casualties

so it's look like with low bonus there are more chance to made a casualties. generaly AI have more combat with low bonus.

So I don't think there is only a 1/100 lucky shot
