Another quickie:

I can't find an explanation for this in the manual: if you select a BB or CA and move the icon over an in-range enemy hex the icon changes to a green circle with an artillery piece or a similar but bigger flashing artillery piece.

Can someone please explain the difference and how should I use each type in conjunction with an attack by my infantry or tanks?

Secondly, engineers, am I correct in thinking they should/can be used in a stack attacking a fortress/fortified hex? Or is there a different tactic for them?

hey,
Some of the big ships with big guns can lay down interdiction fire, it give a movement penelty to the hex you fire on. It don't adds anything to a attack.
Some ships can add shifts to combat but they will then fucntion like normal artillery, you can select them from the combat window if they are in range.
Some landbased artillery can also lay down interdiction fire, and destroy bunkers. They have a special icon in there unit info box on the right side of the screen, someting with a blue dice.

About engineers... i don't think they do anything special, some of them might have some amour ot anti amour bonus, some can build or repair bridges and they have a better chance of blowing bridges then regular units. They also clear mines faster then normal units.

Im not native english speaker, so don't make fun of me [:-] [:)]

Most capital ships, CA and above, can perform Interdiction, much like aircraft, except that its not restricted to roads. That is the green icon with the artillery piece.

Destroyers and similar ships can act as artillery, adding shifts to combat just like land based guns, and those ships will show up as usable artillery units in the combat display if they're in range.

All ships can attack strongpoints, so you will see the combat cursor when you select them and move over an enemy strongpoint.

There is no special bonus for Engineers attacking strongpoints, but they are very useful in quickly clearing minefields.
