Gasbag -> Need some help please... (12/3/2004 10:59:15 PM)

I'm totally new to the game & I need some help with the tutorial. I've got the printed player's guide but I'm finding it to be of little help[&:] ( there seems to be a lot of omissions & errors in the manual - no offense, but whom ever wrote the thing doesn't seem to have tried it out afterward ). Is there a sticky thread ( what I'm looking for is a turn by turn walk through of the " Into Battle " scenario )? Some of the concepts I understand ( ie. moving TF's ) but I don't know how to do things like laying mines, etc. Is it necessary to read the entire manual ( pdf file ) before attempting this one? I have v. 2.0 of the game & have patched it to v. 2.30. Should I play the tutorial using the boxed version ( 2.0 ) & patch the game afterwards?
Thanks.

The manual is pretty good at explaining those minor operations like laying/sweeping mines, bombardment runs, etc. I'd definitely read it. The tutorial does a good job showing you the hows of the game.

Might as well play the tutorial post-patch so you don't get caught by any changes from 2.0 to 2.3 when you go from tutorial to game. Having said that there may be some sort of complication of which I'm not aware.

Minor piece of advice . . . make sure you completely understand what the "do not react/react" and the "retirement allowed" commands mean. It might save physical damage to your puter.

Can you explain what you mean by this please?[&:]

LMAO

He is refering to the fact that if you have a task force out on patrol
and you leave the do not react checked to react your task forces will
engage the enemy when you might not want them to and then
when you lose your entire carrier fleet to an overwhelming force
you tend to smash things like moniters and Keyboards..

Laying mines is relatively simple, you have to disband your minelayers
or subs at either Truck for the japanese or Noumea and Brisbane for
the allies to load mines in the ships.
all you have to do is send them to the destination you would like to
mine and the task forces will lay them there.

I would reccommend loading up a shorter scenario and just try different things
playing head to head like carrier battles with different settings for your aircraft
try landing invasion forces and then retry with forces commited to intercept them
and such, save the game at varius stages and keep replaying with different
things.
Then go on the forums and read thru them as there are a lot of posts covering
tons of issues and if you don't find what you want leave a message in the forums
and some kind soul will help. ( it takes time as everyone is in the WITP forum )

Go to spookies uncommon valor and WITP site and get tons of info there in the
frequently asked questions area.

Thanks for clearing that up. [:)]Thought that there was some weird bug that hadn't been fixed ( & won't be as they've moved on to WTP ). I'll take your suggestions ( especially about loading a small scenario { ie. Coral Sea & play it head to head without FOW until I get the hang of the game }). I've already been to that site & picked up a couple of scenarios & mods.
