sabreman1966mcs -> Holiday Season Purchase? (12/6/2004 10:22:46 PM)

Hiyas,

I'm looking into picking up WitP over the holiday season, but before I commit myself to it, I'm curious to see if anyone has encountered any major problems getting it to run on a system similar to mine. My system does meet the minimum specs for the game, but judging from other posts made that doesn't give me total confidence [:(]

My current system is:

CPU: AMD Duron 900
O/S: Windows 2000 (Build 5.0)
RAM 256MB
Graphics: Nvidia Riva TNT2 Model 64 (32Mb)
DirectX : DirectX 9.0c

Any advise would be appreciated

Cheers

Depends on what you consider running... I have my older computer, a 500 MHz with Win XP and a GE Force 5200 video card (128 MB RAM I think) in it. It runs fine... except... it is super slow... It takes roughly 90 mins to run a PBEM turn (with all features on). But other than a little slow saving / loading and scrolling the map, the orders input works fine.. I'm sure your 900 MHz will run faster than my old P2, but be prepared for slow execution. Perhaps some of the others around here with a 1 GHz can comment as it would be much closer to your speed.

PS Just so you know for reference, on my 2.7 GHz it takes roughly 20-30 mins to execute a turn with all options on

I've run it on a similar system (slightly slower non Celeron CPU and older version of DirectX, everything else almost the same): it was a bit slow but still playable for me.

Save yourself some grief and run DXDiag now. [8D]

I can tell you if you will have problems beforehand and you can get them fixed right now before getting frustrated.

I did most of the beta testing on Windows 2000 so the OS will not be the cause of any problems. You are a bit low on memory but you can disable a lot of Windows 2000's services to gain a fair chunk back. (2K has a much bigger memory footprint compared to XP/98 by default)

Thanks for the speedy responses guys [:D] I'll add WitP to my wish list I think [;)]

Good grief Xargun,

I have a 800 mhz Compaq using WINME with 196mb Ram and an old Voodoo5500 64mb graphics card and it only takes me about 15 minutes to run turn 1 as the Japanese. I have everything enabled except sound. With sound my 2nd turn would take that long. But I also have alot of the delays set to .1 and skip alot of the BS using esc.

I had everything enabled and delays set at 1 and sound running... [:D] My wife has gotten addicted to the new Vampire: Bloodlines game and plays it on my real computer (2.7 GHz system) while I enter my orders and such on the old machine... I was dumb enough to run a turn once... took forever... I have no problem entering my orders on the slower box, but kick her off my computer when I need to execute the turn now... She's quite agreeable with it.. So we can both hang out together and play computer at the same time... Much better for all concerned...
