Catphish -> should I buy this now (12/7/2004 9:25:44 PM)

hello WITP forum
I have a problem and need some help

I am an avid wargamer (go all the way back to the old AV boardgames) and have been playing UV for awhile
For christmas my wife has ask me to pick a game

I am not sure if I should wait for Flashpoint/WAW or go with WITP (seeing I have UV) is there a big difference betwwen UV and WITP?
are the bugs all fixed yet? and what patch level is it on?
how is the online/PBEM play?

let me know thanks

I bought WitP about a month ago and am very, very happy. It is a dream come true for a naval wargame fan. Some things you should consider before purchasing.

1) the game is complex and time-consuming. It is also a lot of fun if you are into that, but expect micromanagement.
2) the game is not perfect. There are some bugs that have to be worked around....check around the forums for details. The patches solve some of this but not all of it. From what I've read here, more patches will be on the way.
3) the editor is very powerful and enables you to tinker with a lot of what-ifs. The upcoming War Plan Orange modification sounds like it will be wonderful.

If you enjoy UV, and know a lot about the Pacific War, and want to learn more, you will probably like WitP. Personally I love it, but I am possibly more tolerant of quirks and bugs than some people.

Game is great, or rather the greatest for timebeing. Bugs are present, although nothing game breaking for me - check wishlist for 1.4 patch.

I should note that for the problems it does have, WitP is actually one of the most stable computer games I've ever purchased. There is one bug that causes crash-to-desk-top but it is easy to avoid.

It's a great game, an instant classic, a must-have for war gamers with any interest in the Pacific in WWII and you can astound your sailing friends with your knowledge of a likely course from Hong Kong to New Caledonia....though that's against the weather as they say...

thanks for the replys

I have the boardgame version of WITP still, when I was in high school I glued the map to a large piece of plywood and covered it with plastic

I just can not find anyone to play it with here

I like PC wargames better now (having a 2 year old and lots of little counters is not a good thing:)
I need to convince my wife that I am worth two games this year not just one

You got the right issue to address. WitP will probably consume more time then every other game you have ever owned. You really should check with her how much she will let you play [:D]

Barring that, http://completecase.com/ [:'(]

We didn't have the plastic, but did pin the map to (as I recall) two 4x8 sheets of plywood because, you know, the ping pong table just wasn't big enough :-)

For what it's worth, I played a fair amount of the WitP board game (including several campaigns that went something like halfway through 42 (We found we got about one week of game time done in one week of real time, and realized we could never get through a whole campaign - but somewhere squirreled away, 20+ years later, I probably still have the records we painstakingly made of every unit, every airpoint, all of the supply dumps, etc. so we could start again "someday" - the optimism of youth)). Anyway, key point is that the paper WitP was probably the most enjoyable wargame I ever played, and my buddies and I always talked about how some day we'd like to use computer software to automate the bookkeeping (OK, this division has a supply rating of 3, which means it can pull 21 supply points from this depot over there and make a new depot, minus the 3 supply it needs to maintain itself this turn. Now, onto the next unit...). When (matrix) WitP came out, it was the game I've always wanted but didn't even know to ask for. It's not at all a copy of the board game; but it's a similar scale (60 mile hexes versus the 40/50/60 of the boardgame) and has almost the same unit granularity (air units are in groups or squadrons, which are typically 9-36 planes, versus the "air points", which I think were 3 planes; but you get all the ships (more, actually), land units are similar, etc.), same epic scale, so it has much of the same feel as the board game for me. The computer game does much stuff better, not a lot of stuff worse. Although, as with any computer software, there are some bugs that can be kind of annoying...

Twotribes -> RE: should I buy this now (12/8/2004 2:56:40 PM)

My first monster game was War in Europe. I had bought War in the west first then bought War in the East. When I was on active duty I used to irritate my Company GySgt and First Sgt, as a Sgt I had a single room and would put up most of the maps on the floor and leave them there even during inspections, LOL It went with the 3 teddy bears I kept on my pillow to piss them off )

Ron Saueracker -> RE: should I buy this now (12/8/2004 3:59:57 PM)

Buy it! Huge games have bugs and they are working hard to squash the few that are scurrying around. More people buying the game means it is just that more successful and may garner continued support and a long life. I bitch alot so I need to get laid more regularly but this game has been hell on my social life!

Short answer:

YES !!!

El Savior -> RE: should I buy this now (12/8/2004 4:57:52 PM)

It took few months before I finally decided to buy this game. I was lurking here and checking screenshots. Big price was a issue for me and also I had problems with credit card. For some odd reason it did not accepted my credit card(s). Actually I did try to buy this game few months ago, but I can't make it work. Anyway I bought WITP few days ago by phone. It was a positive surprise. I knew this game would be good, but it was even more complex and better than I had dreamed. After few hours I was totally hooked by this game.

* Prepare for very long gaming sessions. First turn could take 2-3 hours and this game really need time.

* There are lot of micromanagement and GUI isn't the best, but you can see it and imagine by looking screenshots.

* If you have play UV and likes, you will like this too. This is just much more than UV was.

* This is really the first game where you need to PLAN what you do. You will pay for your mistakes later. This is great.

I would say like most of here: buy it!
