Behemoth -> Task force sea trials (12/14/2004 11:06:57 PM)

I've been putting all my surface ships minus transports into Continuous, supply transport TFs so they will automatically gain experience ie; through sea trials. Is there a downside to doing this? I know it makes them vulnerable, but my question is, is this a workable solution to micromanging their shakedown cruises? thx out-

I just put them in transport convoys as escorts. The vast majority of the inexperienced ones are the PG/PC/MSW auxiliary types. They are designated mostly for escort duty anyway, so I just make sure only some of a TF's escorts are newbies. Never seem to have ships available just for training exercises. They are either in action or on much needed refit/repair.

Thanks Mynok. True not the best use of these ships I know, if I was playing a human I'd be short a couple of hundred tranports by now. Escort duty is a much better option, I will change doctrine as of yesterday.

I know this will be hard to do sometimes. If you can put at least one fairly trained ship with the rookies. A lot of times the green ships will attack if the trained one does. For the US use one of the DMS's or a flushdeck DD. They have a 4 for ASW, and are somewhat better trained.

You can do what I did with a lot of my ships I had in, like Pearl Harbor, that were below their non combat max skill level: I simply put them into a task force, set it to patrol and parked them a hex outside of Pearl Harbor and just left them there until they came back because of lack of fuel. They gained skill and weren't put into any danger.

Halsey said it more clearly than I did: the key is to ensure that at least some of your escorts are fairly experienced. I've actually had some decent success using a DD or APD with 3-4 newbie PC's in ASW TF's. I got 3 hits on subs over the last two days--all by the PC's.

They seem to be doing ok, even though I'm not being very diligent about tracking the experience growth.
