Danny Boy -> DirectDraw Initialisation Error? (12/15/2004 7:26:44 PM)

Hi Guys,

Although new to this forum I have been a SP fan (in its' different guises) since '96. All through the Matrix versions I have never had any install or play issues...unti now. Whether it's XP Pro SP2 or an issue with my graphic card I don't know...but I do need help.

Just downloaded v8.2 and 8.3 update, and after clean boot (only Norton running in background with personall firewall off) and attempt to start game via both shortcut and mech.exe from root I get the same error message when I escape at the starting creds..."DirectDraw Initialisation Error #-2147467263" I get the same message even when I let the whole intro roll!

I've tried all the usual help sites from Microsoft/Dell/PCPro etc and can't get any useful help.

Machine I'm running is Dell P4 3.2ghz 1024mb ram with XP Pro SP2 and ATI FireGL V3100 with 128mb ram. Norton Internet Security and Antivirus are running in back.

I've tried running in win'98 and 2000 modes also to no avail, and installed DirectX 9c

I have no idea what to try next...any help would be much appreciated

Cheers!

PS I have also tried running on P2 450 Win'98 and that didn't work either, although the error message there was regarding video memory.

Do you know off hand what make your motherboard is?

INTEL, ASUS, FIC, etc.

Thanks Danny Boy but it doesn't help. I have as ASUS motherboard and SPWAW 8.20 0r 8.30 will not work on my computer.

My video screen goes totally black during play.

I have been informed by a couple of knowledgable forum member that the cause is my ASUS motherboard.

Keep asking for assistance I'm sure someone will lead you in the right direction

Just curious do you know the intel chipset number.

U.S. Navy 1969 through 1973.

Vietnam

Intel 925X Chipset

Hats off to you for your tour(s). You're a tad older than me (42) but even at my young[;)] age I remember the evening news being a fascinating, black and white mix of coal mining strikes in the UK and footage of M113's disappearing into rice paddies....surreal!

Cheers!

Just wanted to see if you and I had the same Intel chipset.

The GOOD OLD DAYS.

Thanks

In my experience, that error is always related to the video card drivers. Not necessarily with them being out of date only, it is often seen when loading the latest drivers which are prehaps not so solid.

DirectDraw Initialization is exactly that... Some of the very first commands that need to interact with your video drivers.

My advice. Get the latest drivers for your video card from the manufacturer preferably. Or if your running the latest, Try an older revision.

Also, for the heck of it.. Set you resolution as low as it will go and run the game again.

that, and unistall the old ones before updating them. Many people simply install drivers over the old ones, which in certain cases causes more problems then it helps. Depending on your type of grpahic card there are many freeware tools out there that let you remove the drivers completly (which does not happen if you simply uninstall the Windows way).

Thanks chaps,

Just one problem with messing about with the drivers...the pc is actually my workstation and although I'm happy to tinker...I must be sure that what I tinker with is not going to screw up the rest of the days work!

FYI the PC is only three weeks old so all the drivers that are on board are what was shipped. Bit of a novice question but do I have the ability to roll back to a previous driver even if it's new?

Nick
